Acura Yellow Diesel Particulate Filter DPF Warning Light

Yellow Priority

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Acura Yellow Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Warning Light is a specialized diagnostic indicator found on diesel-powered Acura vehicles (predominantly in global markets where Acura and Honda offer clean diesel i-DTEC powertrains). This amber or yellow-colored symbol alerts the driver that the vehicle’s exhaust aftertreatment system has accumulated a significant level of particulate matter (soot) or that the automatic regeneration cycle has been interrupted. The Engine Control Module (ECM) continuously monitors the pressure differential across the DPF using upstream and downstream exhaust pressure sensors, alongside exhaust gas temperature sensors. When soot buildup restricts exhaust flow beyond a pre-calibrated threshold, or if consecutive passive and active regeneration attempts fail, the ECM triggers this yellow advisory light to prompt corrective action before the soot loading enters a critical, non-reversible state.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

Yes, you can still drive the vehicle, but with immediate operational caveats. Because this indicator carries a yellow severity rating, it signifies a non-emergency operational fault rather than an immediate catastrophic engine shutdown. However, you should not ignore it. Continued driving under purely short-trip or stop-and-go conditions will cause soot levels to escalate rapidly. This will eventually force the ECM to transition the vehicle into a restrictive Limp Mode or trigger a red warning light, potentially causing permanent thermal or mechanical damage to the DPF substrate, which requires costly replacement rather than a simple regeneration procedure.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Incomplete Active Regenerations: Frequent short-distance urban driving prevents the exhaust gas temperature from reaching the necessary 600 degrees Celsius required to burn off accumulated soot particles within the ceramic honeycomb structure.
  • Differential Pressure Sensor Failure: Malfunctioning or drift in the DPF differential pressure sensor can send erroneous voltage signals to the ECM, falsely reporting a high soot load when the filter is actually operating within normal parameters.
  • Fuel Injection or Combustion Issues: Worn fuel injectors, faulty glow plugs, or a stuck Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve can lead to excessive particulate production and heavy smoke output, rapidly overwhelming the capacity of the diesel particulate filter.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

To accurately diagnose and reset the Acura Yellow Diesel Particulate Filter DPF Warning Light, you must perform a systematic technical evaluation. First, connect an advanced, diesel-capable OBD-II diagnostic scanner to the vehicle data link connector under the dashboard to retrieve specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) related to the DPF system, such as P2463 or P2453. Inspect the rubber vacuum and pressure hoses leading to the differential pressure sensor for cracking, blockages, or melting. If the sensor and hoses are intact and no hard mechanical faults exist, take the vehicle out on an open highway or expressway. Drive continuously at a sustained speed of above 50 miles per hour (80 kilometers per hour) for approximately twenty to thirty minutes at an elevated engine RPM (around 2,000 to 2,500 RPM) to allow the ECM to initiate a successful passive or active regeneration cycle, which will naturally clear the soot and extinguish the light. If the light persists or if the soot load is critically high, a professional forced stationary regeneration must be commanded using an advanced diagnostic scan tool, followed by clearing the fault codes.
