Chevrolet Yellow Glow Plug Warning Light

⚠️ WARNING / SERVICE REQUIRED

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Chevrolet Yellow Glow Plug Warning Light is an essential diagnostic indicator exclusively found on diesel-powered Chevrolet vehicles, such as the Cruze Diesel, Colorado Duramax, and Silverado Heavy Duty trucks equipped with Duramax diesel powerplants. Unlike standard gasoline engines that use electrical spark plugs to ignite air-fuel mixtures, diesel engines rely on compression heat. Under cold operating conditions or during initial ignition sequences, glow plugs act as high-intensity heating elements inside the combustion chambers to raise cylinder temperatures sufficiently for proper diesel fuel combustion. When the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Glow Plug Control Module (GPCM) detects a failure, abnormal resistance, voltage drop, or communication breakdown within the glow plug pre-heating subsystem, it illuminates this yellow indicator light on the instrument cluster to alert the driver of a fault.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

As a general rule, a yellow severity rating means caution, but it does not mandate an immediate roadside stop unless accompanied by other severe symptoms like engine derate or high coolant temperatures. However, you must evaluate the driving conditions. If the glow plug light illuminates while the engine is already warm and running, you can typically drive the vehicle to a service facility, though you may experience extended cranking times during the next startup, rough idling, white smoke emissions from unburnt diesel fuel, or a temporary drop in fuel efficiency. Conversely, if the light illuminates in sub-freezing temperatures or flashes rapidly while driving (which on some Chevrolet models indicates a serious powertrain or emissions system fault), starting the engine after a shutdown may become impossible until the underlying electrical or mechanical failure is resolved.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Failed Glow Plug Element: Internal burnout, open circuits, or structural degradation of the metallic heating element within one or more individual glow plugs due to high thermal cycling and mileage wear.
  • Glow Plug Control Module (GPCM) Malfunction: An internal electronic failure, blown internal relay, or burnt micro-circuitry within the dedicated module responsible for regulating electrical current and timing to the glow plugs.
  • Wiring Harness and High-Resistance Connections: Corrosion, thermal degradation, frayed wiring, or loose terminal pins at the glow plug harness connector, which introduces excessive electrical resistance that the ECM interprets as a circuit fault.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing the Chevrolet Yellow Glow Plug Warning Light requires a systematic approach beginning with an OBD-II scanner capable of reading enhanced diesel powertrain diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), such as P0670 through P0678, which pinpoint specific cylinder glow plug circuits. Once the generic or manufacturer-specific code identifies the problem area, pop the hood and perform a visual inspection of the wiring harness leading to the glow plugs. Using a digital multimeter set to ohms, disconnect the wiring harness from each glow plug and measure resistance across the glow plug terminal to ground; healthy glow plugs typically exhibit very low resistance (under 2 ohms), while an open circuit indicates a dead plug. Check the glow plug fuse in the under-hood electrical center. After replacing the faulty glow plugs, harness, or control module, use your OBD-II scan tool to clear the diagnostic trouble codes from the ECM memory. The warning light will then reset and remain off, provided the underlying fault has been successfully repaired.
