DAF Yellow Anti-Lock Braking System ABS Warning Light

ABS
⚠️ WARNING / SERVICE REQUIRED

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The DAF Yellow Anti-Lock Braking System ABS Warning Light indicates a fault within the electronic anti-lock braking circuitry of your heavy-duty DAF commercial vehicle. Specifically, the Electronic Braking System (EBS) or dedicated ABS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) has registered an operational anomaly, out-of-range sensor voltage, or intermittent continuity loss across one or more wheel-end circuits, modulators, or related CAN bus lines. Modern DAF trucks continuously monitor wheel speed variance, exciter ring integrity, and valve response times. When the ECU detects a deviation from baseline parameters that compromises optimum skid-prevention control, it illuminates this yellow warning indicator to notify the operator of a system degradation.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

Because this is a yellow-rated warning light, it signifies a non-immediate, degraded-mode fault rather than an absolute catastrophic failure of the primary friction brakes. You can typically still drive the vehicle to a safe stopping point or a maintenance facility, but you must do so with extreme caution. The core foundation braking system remains mechanically operational via air pressure, but the anti-lock prevention mechanism is disabled. This means heavy or emergency braking on slick, wet, or unpaved surfaces may cause wheel lock-up, loss of directional stability, and significantly extended stopping distances. Immediate inspection is strongly advised.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Wheel Speed Sensor Contamination or Air Gap Fault: Accumulation of metallic debris, brake dust, or grease on the inductive wheel speed sensor tip, or an incorrect physical air gap between the sensor and the tone wheel, leading to erratic signal generation.
  • Damaged Sensor Wiring Harness or Connectors: Due to heavy commercial operating conditions, road salt, and constant vibration, the wiring harness leading to individual wheel sensors or modulator valves frequently suffers from chafing, corrosion, or internal wire breakage.
  • Faulty ABS Modulator Valve or Internal ECU Failure: An internal electrical fault within the modulator valve assembly or a communication breakdown inside the central DAF EBS/ABS control module, disrupting pneumatic pressure regulation during braking events.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing this yellow DAF ABS warning requires a systematic approach beginning with a visual inspection of all wheel-end assemblies for loose wiring, physical damage, or excessive debris on the tone rings. Next, utilize a heavy-duty commercial vehicle diagnostic tool or a specialized DAF DAVIE diagnostic laptop connected to the vehicle communication port to retrieve active and stored fault codes from the EBS/ABS module. Use a digital multimeter to check sensor resistance and AC voltage output while manually spinning the wheel if a specific sensor circuit code is present. Once the underlying mechanical or electrical component is repaired or replaced, clear the diagnostic trouble codes using the scan tool to extinguish the yellow warning light.
