DAF Yellow Blind Spot Monitoring BSM Warning Light

⚠️ WARNING / SERVICE REQUIRED

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The DAF Yellow Blind Spot Monitoring BSM Warning Light illuminates on the instrument cluster of DAF commercial vehicles when the Electronic Vehicle Information Control system detects a fault within the advanced driver assistance subsystem. Specifically, this indicator points to a malfunction in the side-scan radar units, ultrasonic sensors, or the dedicated BSM Electronic Control Unit responsible for monitoring adjacent traffic lanes where the driver experiences restricted visibility. On modern DAF trucks, the system relies on bumper-mounted or chassis-integrated radar transceivers that continuously emit radio frequency waves to calculate the relative speed, distance, and trajectory of surrounding vehicles. When a Yellow warning light activates, the central vehicle network has registered a communication timeout, a sensor misalignment, an internal circuit fault, or signal blockage that compromises the operational integrity of the blind spot coverage area.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

From a purely mechanical and propulsion standpoint, the vehicle remains entirely drivable because the Blind Spot Monitoring system is a secondary safety feature and does not directly control the powertrain, braking hydraulics, or steering systems of your DAF truck. However, operating the vehicle with an active BSM warning light means your automated lane-change assistance and blind-spot collision warning systems are completely disabled. Given the massive blind spots inherent to commercial transport vehicles and semi-trailers, driving with this fault significantly increases the risk of side-swipe accidents during highway navigation or urban lane merges. It is recommended to complete your current transit while relying entirely on manual mirror checks, before scheduling a diagnostic inspection.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Radar Transceiver Misalignment: Minor impacts, dock bumps, or road vibrations can shift the physical mounting bracket of the side radar sensors out of their precise factory calibration angle, triggering a fault code in the BSM module.
  • Severe Accumulation of Debris: Road salt, heavy mud, ice, or thick layers of grime plastered directly over the bumper-mounted radar zones will block the radio frequency signals, causing the system to temporarily fault out.
  • Wiring Harness or Connector Corrosion: Exposure to harsh weather, moisture, and road de-icing chemicals frequently leads to oxidation, pin-fretting, or open circuits within the waterproof electrical connectors servicing the BSM sensors.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing this warning light requires a systematic approach beginning with a physical inspection of the exterior bumper fascia and side panels where the BSM radar units are housed, ensuring they are completely free of dirt, ice, and physical damage. Next, inspect the exposed wiring harnesses and multi-pin electrical connectors leading to the radar sensors for signs of moisture ingress, corrosion, or frayed wires. Because this is an advanced electronic safety subsystem, a professional-grade commercial diagnostic tool or OBD2 scanner capable of communicating with the DAF Body Controller and ADAS modules is required to retrieve specific diagnostic trouble codes. Once the underlying mechanical or electrical fault is repaired—such as cleaning a connector, straightening a bracket, or replacing a failed sensor—the diagnostic tool must be used to clear the fault memory and perform any necessary radar calibration routines to turn off the dashboard indicator.
