Geely Yellow Glow Plug Warning Light

⚠️ WARNING / SERVICE REQUIRED

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Geely Yellow Glow Plug Warning Light is a specialized dashboard indicator found primarily on diesel-powered Geely vehicles. Unlike standard gasoline ignition systems, diesel engines rely on compression-ignition, which requires intense thermal energy inside the combustion chambers to ignite diesel fuel efficiently, especially during cold starts. The glowing coil icon represents the operation of the intake manifold pre-heating elements known as glow plugs. When this yellow indicator illuminates or flashes on your Geely instrument cluster, it signals that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an operational fault, abnormal electrical resistance, or a failure within the pre-heating subsystem. The ECM continuously monitors the voltage draw and circuit continuity of each individual glow plug, the glow plug relay, and the associated wiring harness to ensure proper combustion temperatures are met.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

In most cases involving a yellow-rated severity indicator, you can continue to drive your Geely vehicle short distances to reach a service center, but you should do so with caution. Because this is a yellow warning rather than a red emergency light, it does not typically signify an immediate catastrophic engine failure. However, driving with a malfunctioning glow plug system can lead to severe cold-start issues, prolonged cranking times that degrade your starter motor, rough idling, incomplete fuel combustion, and increased emissions of unburned hydrocarbon smoke. If the light begins flashing while driving, it may indicate a more serious powertrain management fault that could force the vehicle into a protective limp mode, severely restricting engine power.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Burnt-Out Glow Plug Heating Element: Over time, the internal resistive heating coils within one or more glow plugs degrade due to thermal fatigue and high electrical current, causing an open circuit that triggers the ECM fault code.
  • Defective Glow Plug Control Module or Relay: The solid-state relay or control unit responsible for switching high amperage to the glow plugs can fail internally, preventing the system from delivering necessary power during pre-heating cycles.
  • High Resistance in Wiring Harness or Connectors: Corrosion, thermal damage, or loose pin tension in the electrical harness connecting the ECM to the glow plugs can alter circuit resistance, leading to diagnostic trouble codes.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing the Geely Yellow Glow Plug Warning Light requires a systematic approach beginning with an OBD-II scanner capable of reading manufacturer-specific diesel powertrain trouble codes, such as P0670 through P0674. Connect the diagnostic tool to the under-dash port to pinpoint which cylinder circuit is reporting a fault. Next, open the hood and perform a visual inspection of the glow plug wiring harness for loose connections or corrosion. Using a digital multimeter set to resistance mode, test each glow plug individually by disconnecting its terminal and measuring ohms to ground; a reading of zero or infinite resistance confirms a failed plug. Once the faulty component is physically replaced or repaired, use the OBD-II scanner to clear the diagnostic trouble codes from the ECM memory to extinguish the warning light on your dashboard.
