Jaguar Red Electric Power Steering EPS Warning Light

🔴 CRITICAL / STOP DRIVING

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Jaguar Red Electric Power Steering (EPS) Warning Light is a critical alert originating from the vehicle’s Restraints Control Module, Powertrain Control Module, or dedicated EPS Control Module. Unlike traditional hydraulic setups, modern Jaguar vehicles utilize a brushless electric motor mounted to the steering rack or steering column to provide variable-assist steering. The vehicle’s onboard computers continuously monitor motor temperature, rotational position sensors, CAN bus communication networks, and system voltage. When the Red EPS light illuminates, it indicates a catastrophic or complete failure within the power steering system architecture, meaning the electric assist motor has completely shut down or the control unit has detected an unrecoverable internal fault.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

No, you must not drive the vehicle with a red EPS warning light illuminated. A red severity rating demands immediate action and indicates a high risk of total loss of power steering assist. While mechanical linkage remains intact through the steering column and rack, the sudden absence of electronic boost will make the steering wheel extremely heavy, often requiring massive physical effort to turn, especially at low speeds or while parking. Continuing to drive risks a complete loss of vehicle control, potential steering lockups due to electrical shorts, or collateral damage to the vehicle’s supplemental restraint and electrical charging systems.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Complete EPS Motor Failure: Internal short circuits, burned-out windings, or brush degradation within the electric assist motor can render the unit completely inoperable, instantly triggering the red warning light.
  • Voltage Drops and Alternator Failure: Electric power steering systems draw massive electrical currents. If the vehicle’s battery state of health is degraded or the alternator fails to supply a stable 14.2 volts, the EPS module will shut down to protect the vehicle’s primary electrical grid.
  • CAN Bus Communication Loss: Corroded wiring harnesses, damaged connectors, or water intrusion in the sub-framing can sever data communication lines between the EPS module, the anti-lock braking system (ABS), and the main engine computer.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing a red EPS warning light on a Jaguar requires specialized equipment due to the complexity of modern multiplexed electrical networks. Begin by performing a visual inspection under the hood to check the primary 12-volt battery terminals for corrosion, looseness, and testing the battery load capacity with a digital multimeter. Next, connect an advanced, Jaguar-compatible OBD2 diagnostic scanner capable of reading manufacturer-specific chassis (C-codes) and network (U-codes) diagnostic trouble codes. Scan the EPS module for stored fault codes to identify whether the issue is sensor-related, voltage-related, or a hardware failure. If a temporary voltage drop caused the fault, clearing the codes via the diagnostic tool may extinguish the light; however, if a hard mechanical or electrical failure is present, the warning light will immediately return until the faulty component, such as the EPS motor assembly or wiring harness, is professionally repaired or replaced.
