Volvo Red Electric Power Steering EPS Warning Light

🔴 CRITICAL / STOP DRIVING

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Volvo Red Electric Power Steering EPS Warning Light is a critical alert signaling a total or severe partial failure within the vehicle’s Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) architecture. Unlike traditional hydraulic systems, modern Volvo models utilize an electronic rack-mounted or column-mounted brushless servomotor controlled by a dedicated Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) or integrated within the Central Electronic Module (CEM). When this red indicator illuminates, the vehicle network’s safety protocols have detected a catastrophic fault, such as an unresolvable communication loss on the CAN bus, an internal motor short-circuit, excessive operating temperatures, or a catastrophic sensor failure within the steering angle or torque feedback loops. Consequently, the electronic assistance is disabled to prevent erratic steering behavior.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

No, you cannot and should not drive the vehicle while this red warning light is illuminated. A red severity color on a Volvo dashboard denotes an immediate safety hazard that grounds the vehicle. When the electric power steering system shuts down completely due to a red fault state, the driver is left with manual steering mechanics. Because modern steering racks are engineered explicitly to rely on heavy electrical amplification, operating the vehicle without it requires immense physical force to turn the steering wheel—especially at low speeds or while parking—posing an extreme risk of a collision or loss of control.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Electrical Power Supply Failure: A compromised high-amp fuse, corroded main power supply cable, or a failing alternator can starve the power steering servomotor of the necessary voltage and amperage, instantly triggering the red EPS warning.
  • PSCM Internal Hardware Malfunction: The dedicated Power Steering Control Module can suffer from internal component degradation, blown MOSFET transistors, or moisture ingress into the sealed rack housing, rendering the computer brain unresponsive.
  • Torque Sensor Calibration or Signal Loss: The internal torque and steering angle sensors inside the steering column measure the rotational force applied by the driver. If these sensors fail or lose calibration, the system disengages for safety.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing a Volvo red EPS warning requires a methodical approach starting with a dedicated Volvo-compatible OBD2 diagnostic scanner capable of communicating with the chassis and steering modules (VIDA or advanced bi-directional scan tools). Begin by checking the vehicle charging system with a digital multimeter to ensure the battery and alternator are supplying a steady 12.6 to 14.4 volts, as low voltage frequently sparks EPAS faults. Next, plug in your scan tool to retrieve specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored in the PSCM. Inspect the large high-current electrical wiring harness and ground points leading directly to the steering gear rack for corrosion, looseness, or physical damage. Once the root electrical or mechanical fault is repaired, use the diagnostic scanner to clear the trouble codes from the module memory and perform a recalibration of the steering angle sensor if required, which will successfully extinguish the red warning indicator.
