Chery Yellow Anti-Lock Braking System ABS Warning Light

ABS
⚠️ WARNING / SERVICE REQUIRED

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Chery Yellow Anti-Lock Braking System ABS Warning Light indicates a fault within your vehicle’s active safety braking network. Modern Chery models utilize an advanced Electronic Control Unit (ECU) dedicated to the ABS, which continuously monitors wheel slip speeds via inductive or active Hall-effect wheel speed sensors located at each hub. When the ABS module detects an inconsistency in rotational speed data, an open circuit in a solenoid valve, low hydraulic pressure in the modulator assembly, or an internal module failure, it flags a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) and illuminates this yellow indicator on your instrument cluster. While your standard hydraulic friction brakes will generally still function for stopping the vehicle, the computer-controlled anti-lock pulsing mechanism is temporarily disabled to prevent unpredictable braking behavior.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

With a yellow severity rating, the vehicle is typically safe to drive short distances to a repair facility, but it must be approached with extreme caution. The primary mechanical risk is that your wheels can completely lock up during emergency braking maneuvers, particularly on wet, icy, or loose road surfaces. This can lead to severe skidding and a complete loss of steering control while the brakes are heavily applied. Furthermore, active safety systems linked to the ABS module, such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Traction Control, are also disabled when this warning light is active. You should reduce your driving speed, maintain a much greater following distance, and avoid abrupt or panic braking until the underlying issue is professionally diagnosed and repaired.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor: Accumulation of metallic brake dust, road debris, or physical damage to one of the four wheel speed sensors or their corresponding tone rings can interrupt signal transmission to the Chery ABS control module.
  • Damaged Wiring Harness or Connectors: Corrosion, rodent damage, or chafing along the chassis wiring harness leading to the wheel sensors or the hydraulic modulator pump can trigger an intermittent or permanent open circuit fault.
  • ABS Hydraulic Control Module Failure: Internal mechanical wear, stuck electronic solenoids, or electrical burnout within the main ABS pump and valve block assembly can prevent proper brake fluid pressure modulation.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing this warning light requires more than a basic powertrain OBD2 scanner, as generic code readers typically cannot read chassis (C-codes) or ABS modules. You will need a bi-directional automotive diagnostic scanner capable of communicating with Chery-specific body and chassis control modules to retrieve the exact DTCs stored in the ABS computer. Once connected, pull the specific trouble codes to isolate which wheel or component is failing. Visually inspect the associated wheel speed sensor wiring and clean any metallic debris off the sensor tip. If a mechanical component or sensor is replaced, clear the diagnostic trouble codes using the scanner to reset the system and turn off the dashboard warning light. If the light remains illuminated after clearing, a deeper electrical resistance check using a digital multimeter may be required to trace faulty wiring.
