Chery Red Airbag SRS Malfunction Warning Light

🔴 CRITICAL / STOP DRIVING

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Chery Red Airbag SRS Malfunction Warning Light is a critical safety alert designed to notify the driver of a fault within the vehicle Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). In Chery vehicles, such as the Tiggo and Arrizo series, the SRS control unit continuously monitors the integrity of the entire safety network, including crash impact sensors, seatbelt pretensioners, clocksprings, side-curtain airbags, and front driver and passenger airbags. When the ignition is cycled to the ON position, the SRS module performs a self-diagnostic routine. If the module detects an abnormal circuit resistance, an open circuit, a short, or a communication failure within any of these peripheral components, it illuminates this red warning light to indicate that the restraint system is compromised and may fail to deploy during a collision.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

The strict mechanical and safety verdict is that you should not ignore this red warning light, though it does not affect the mechanical driveability or engine performance of your Chery vehicle. Because the indicator carries a red severity rating, it signifies an active safety system failure. If you continue to operate the vehicle with the SRS light illuminated, you run the severe risk that your airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, and related safety devices will fail to deploy in the event of an accident, or conversely, that they could deploy inadvertently. It is strongly recommended to have the vehicle inspected and repaired immediately by a qualified technician.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Clockspring Failure: The spiral cable assembly located behind the steering wheel wears out over time due to constant steering rotations, breaking the electrical continuity to the driver airbag and horn circuit.
  • Under-Seat Wiring Harness Resistance: Movement of the front seats back and forth can strain, pinch, or corrode the yellow SRS wiring connectors and seatbelt buckle sensors located beneath the driver and passenger seats.
  • Failed Crash Impact Sensor: Front or side impact sensors mounted near the bumper structures or frame rails can suffer from moisture intrusion, physical corrosion from road salt, or internal electronic failure.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing a Chery SRS fault requires specialized tools because generic OBD-2 code readers designed strictly for engine emission codes cannot access the Supplemental Restraint System module. You will need an advanced bidirectional diagnostic scan tool capable of reading manufacturer-specific SRS body codes. Begin by connecting the diagnostic scanner to the 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC) beneath the dashboard to retrieve the specific diagnostic trouble code (DTC) pointing to the faulty component, such as a driver-side squib circuit high resistance. Inspect the physical wiring, connectors, and fuses associated with that specific code. Once the underlying mechanical or electrical repair is properly executed—such as replacing a damaged clockspring or securing a loose under-seat connector—use the advanced diagnostic scanner to clear the trouble codes from the SRS memory and extinguish the dashboard warning light.
