Engine BMW M54B22

The M54B22, the junior engine in the M54 series (which also includes the M54B25, M54B30, and S54B32), is an evolution of the M52TUB20. It has a new cast iron crankshaft with a stroke of 72 mm (it was previously 66 mm), lightweight pistons, modified 145 mm forged connecting rods, and an old aluminum cylinder block with cast iron liners.

The control system has been replaced with Siemens MS43 and Siemens MS45 (Siemens MS45.1 for the US), an electronic throttle with a diameter of 62 mm has been used, and the cylinder head is similar to the M52TU with Double VANOS. The DISA intake manifold has also been modified, becoming slightly shorter with large channels.

BMW vehicles with an index of 20i were fitted with this motor.

Disadvantages of the M54B22 engine

This engine is terrified of overheating, so keep an eye on the cooling system’s condition;
The oil burn starts when the piston rings are too thin;
Here, the crankcase ventilation valve is another source of lubrication loss;
DISA dampers in the intake manifold are frequently wedge-shaped and prone to self-cracking;
Vanos phase regulators and hydraulic lifters are rendered inoperable by low-quality oil;
This is where the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors most frequently malfunction electrically;
Oil seeping into spark plug wells can also result in valve cover leaks.
