The fifth generation of the Carina model and the well-liked Sprinter Carib station wagon in Japan were equipped with the 1.6-liter Toyota 4A-FHE injection engine, which the company produced between 1990 and 1995. In essence, this power unit is just a sports variant of the well-known 4A-FE engine.

The engines 8A-FE, 5A-FE, 5A-FHE, 4A-FE, 4A-FHE, 4A-GE, 4A-GZE, and 7A-FE are also part of the A family.
The engine was mounted on:
- Toyota Carina 5 (T170) in 1990 – 1992;
- Toyota Sprinter 6 (E90) in 1990 – 1995.

Disadvantages of the 4A-FHE engine
Sports settings have no effect on the unit’s dependability and longevity; on specialized forums, people frequently complain about oil consumption and piston pin noise; the contamination of the throttle or injectors is typically the cause of the floating engine speed;
This area lacks hydraulic lifters, and valve clearances must be changed every 90,000 kilometers;
Ignition system issues are linked to the motor’s remaining issues.
