Engine Toyota 4ZZ-FE

The most popular front-wheel drive models from Auris and Corolla were equipped with the 1.4-liter Toyota 4ZZ-FE engine, which was assembled at the company’s Japanese facility between 1999 and 2009. The VVT-i inlet of this power unit featured a variable valve timing system.

The engines in the ZZ family are 1ZZ-FE, 1ZZ-FED, 2ZZ-GE, 3ZZ-FE, and 4ZZ-FE.

The engine was mounted on:

  • Toyota Auris 1 (E150) in 2006 – 2008;
  • Toyota Corolla 8 (E110) in 1999 – 2002; Corolla 9 (E120) in 2000 – 2007; Corolla 10 (E150) in 2006 – 2009.

Disadvantages of the 4ZZ-FE engine

Burnout from oil. A defining characteristic of motors produced prior to 2002. The oil scraper rings are the primary cause. It is preferable to swap them out for analogs made after 2005, and there won’t be any issues. In this instance, decarbonization is not relevant.

The motor made a dull sound. The timing chain was probably stretched, which happens frequently after 150,000 kilometers. It must be replaced. Failure of the chain tensioner drive itself is another possibility. There is no knocking on valves.

Turnovers that float. Flushing both the idle valve and the throttle delay module will solve the issue.

Vibration of the body. This may be caused by the rear engine mount. However, the motor may simply vibrate on its own.

This series’ units’ severe fear of overheating is a drawback. The cylinder block is able to move as a result. It will therefore need to be replaced. In this instance, the official manufacturer does not approve of or welcome boring. Generally speaking, the engine resource is likewise short—just 200,000 kilometers. Nonetheless, copies made after 2005 are generally fully functional and error-free.
