Acura Yellow Anti-Lock Braking System ABS Warning Light

ABS
⚠️ WARNING / SERVICE REQUIRED

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Acura Yellow Anti-Lock Braking System ABS Warning Light illuminates when the Acura VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) or ABS Electronic Control Unit (Modulator) detects a fault within the anti-lock braking network. During every ignition cycle, the ABS control module performs a self-test, checking the integrity of wheel speed sensors, hydraulic solenoids, pump motor resistance, and communication via the Controller Area Network (CAN bus). If the module registers an implausible signal, out-of-range electrical resistance, or hydraulic pressure loss, it disables the anti-lock system to prevent erratic braking behavior and illuminates this yellow warning indicator on your dashboard.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

The short answer is yes, but with significant caveats. Because this is a yellow severity indicator, your baseline hydraulic foundation brakes will still function normally, allowing you to stop the vehicle under standard braking conditions. However, your anti-lock braking protection, traction control, and stability assist features are entirely deactivated. If you attempt to brake hard on slippery, wet, or icy surfaces, your wheels will lock up, potentially causing a loss of directional steering control and skidding. You should drive directly to a qualified repair facility with heightened caution, maintaining extended following distances.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Wheel Speed Sensor Failure: Debris, metallic brake dust accumulation, or physical damage to one of the four magnetic wheel speed sensors or their corresponding pulser rings can cause signal dropouts.
  • Faulty ABS Control Module or Modulator: Internal electronic failures, dry solder joints, or sticking hydraulic isolation valves within the integrated ABS modulator assembly can trigger an internal fault code.
  • Damaged Wiring Harness or Corrosion: Road salt, moisture, and vibration frequently compromise the wiring harness leading to the wheel speed sensors, resulting in open circuits or high resistance.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing this warning light requires more than a standard generic OBD2 code reader, as basic scanners only read powertrain codes (P-codes). You will need an advanced automotive diagnostic scanner capable of communicating with the Acura Chassis (C-codes) and Body (B-codes) control modules to retrieve the specific ABS diagnostic trouble code (DTC). Once connected, read the active codes to identify which wheel circuit or electronic component has failed. Inspect the corresponding wheel speed sensor wiring and clean any metallic debris off the sensor tip. After repairing the underlying mechanical or electrical fault, use the diagnostic scanner to clear the DTC from the ABS module memory. If the repair is successful, the yellow warning light will extinguish upon the next ignition cycle or once the vehicle exceeds a predetermined speed threshold.
