Audi Green ECO Mode System Indicator Light

ECO
🟢 INFO / SYSTEM ACTIVE

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Audi Green ECO Mode System Indicator Light illuminates on your instrument cluster to inform you that the vehicle’s efficiency-oriented driving program is actively engaged. In modern Audi models, this indicator is part of the Audi Drive Select ecosystem or the efficiency program integrated into the Driver Information System (DIS). When this green symbol appears, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and Transmission Control Module (TCM) have adjusted their operating parameters to maximize fuel economy. This subsystem actively alters throttle mapping sensitivity, transmission shift points to encourage earlier upshifts, climate control compressor loads, and sometimes even the behavior of the Start-Stop system and Coasting mode (where the dual-clutch transmission decouples the engine from the drivetrain when coasting to reduce mechanical drag). The vehicle’s sensors—including accelerator pedal position sensors, vehicle speed sensors, and ambient temperature monitors—continuously feed data to the central computer, which determines when the vehicle is being operated in a manner that favors optimal fuel efficiency over maximum dynamic performance.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

Yes, you can—and should—continue driving normally with this light illuminated. Because this indicator is green, it signifies a purely informational and positive operational status rather than a fault or mechanical failure. In automotive diagnostic color-coding, green indicates that a comfort, convenience, or efficiency system is functioning as intended. There are zero immediate risks to your engine, transmission, or overall vehicle safety when this light is active. The only noticeable difference while driving will be a slightly more relaxed throttle response and potentially earlier gear changes as the vehicle prioritizes conserving fuel and reducing emissions.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Driver Activation via Audi Drive Select: The driver has manually selected the Efficiency mode using the center console toggle switch, MMI infotainment menu, or steering wheel controls, prompting the system to optimize fuel consumption.
  • Automatic Efficiency Profile Engagement: The Powertrain Control Module has automatically transitioned the vehicle into an eco-friendly state based on sustained steady-state highway cruising conditions or mapping parameters designed to meet corporate average fuel economy targets.
  • Software Adaptation to Driving Habits: The transmission and engine control units have learned a smooth, conservative driving style over a prolonged period and have autonomously engaged efficiency parameters to match the driver’s current operational inputs.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Because the Green ECO Mode indicator is a design feature rather than a diagnostic trouble code (DTC), it does not indicate a system malfunction and does not require an OBD-II scanner or digital multimeter for troubleshooting. If the indicator is currently active and you wish to turn it off, simply use your vehicle’s center console switches, MMI interface, or drive select toggle to switch your driving mode from Efficiency to Comfort, Auto, or Dynamic. Once a different driving mode is selected, the green ECO indicator will extinguish immediately, and the vehicle will return to standard or performance-oriented powertrain calibration. If the light appears to turn on automatically and you prefer it to remain off, you can permanently adjust your default startup driving profile within the personalized vehicle settings menu in your MMI system.
