Cadillac Red Electric Power Steering EPS Warning Light

🔴 CRITICAL / STOP DRIVING

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Cadillac Red Electric Power Steering EPS Warning Light is a critical diagnostic alert indicating a severe fault within your vehicle’s electronic power assist system. Modern Cadillac models—ranging from sedans like the CT5 to luxury SUVs like the Escalade—rely heavily on electric motor-driven steering racks rather than traditional hydraulic power steering pumps. The Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) continuously monitors the health of the steering angle sensors, electric assist motor, internal torque sensors, and circuit voltage. When the PSCM detects a catastrophic communication failure, total loss of motor torque assistance, internal thermal overload, or a critical voltage drop within the steering bus, it illuminates this red warning light on your instrument cluster to alert the driver of an immediate system shutdown.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

No, you cannot and should not drive the vehicle while this red warning light is illuminated. Because the severity color is red, it dictates a critical safety emergency. A red EPS indicator means the electric power assist has completely disengaged or is operating unpredictably. Without power assistance, your Cadillac will revert to manual steering, requiring immense physical force to turn the steering wheel—particularly at low speeds, during parking maneuvers, or in emergency evasive actions. Continuing to drive risks a complete loss of steering control, potential mechanical binding in the steering rack, and catastrophic accident liability.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Low System Voltage or Alternator Failure: The electric power steering motor draws heavy electrical current. If the battery state of health is poor, or if the alternator fails to supply a stable charging voltage above 13.5 volts, the PSCM will trigger a red warning light and shut down to protect the vehicle’s electrical architecture.
  • Internal Steering Torque Sensor Failure: The internal sensors that measure how hard you are turning the steering wheel can fail due to internal component degradation, electrical short circuits, or contamination, leaving the computer blind to driver inputs.
  • Corrosion or Damage to High-Current Harness Connectors: Water intrusion, road salt, or physical chafing on the main power and ground harnesses supplying the steering gear can cause intermittent or permanent communication dropouts between the body control modules and the EPS rack.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing a red EPS warning light requires advanced diagnostic tools beyond a basic generic powertrain OBD2 scanner. First, perform a visual inspection under the hood to check the condition of the battery terminals, main ground straps, and the visible wiring harness leading down to the steering gear assembly. Next, connect an advanced, bi-directional OBD2 diagnostic scanner capable of reading Chassis (C-code) and Network (U-code) diagnostics to access the Power Steering Control Module. Retrieve the specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored in the PSCM memory. Use a digital multimeter to verify that the charging system is outputting correct voltage and that the EPS module is receiving adequate power. Once the underlying mechanical or electrical root cause is repaired—such as replacing a failed wiring harness, clearing corrosion, or replacing a faulty steering gear assembly—use the diagnostic scanner to clear the fault codes from the module memory and perform a mandatory steering angle sensor calibration procedure to extinguish the warning light.
