Chrysler Yellow Throttle Control Electronic Warning Light

⚠️ WARNING / SERVICE REQUIRED

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Chrysler Yellow Throttle Control Electronic Warning Light, commonly depicted as a lightning bolt symbol enclosed within parentheses, signifies a fault within the electronic throttle control (ETC) system. In modern Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and RAM vehicles, traditional mechanical throttle cables have been replaced by a drive-by-wire system. This architecture relies on dual accelerator pedal position (APP) sensors, an intelligent powertrain control module (PCM), an electric throttle body actuator motor, and redundant throttle position (TP) sensors. When this yellow indicator illuminates, the PCM has detected a correlation error, signal voltage discrepancy, or mechanical resistance within the throttle actuator circuit that prevents accurate metering of air intake into the engine.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

Because this is rated as a yellow severity indicator, your vehicle enters a designated failsafe operating state known as limp-home mode. While the engine will technically remain running, you can still drive with this light on only for very short distances to reach a safe parking location or repair facility. The PCM will severely restrict throttle response, limit engine RPM, and disable cruise control to prevent unintended acceleration or catastrophic engine overspeed. Continuing to drive extensively with an active ETC warning risks stranding you unexpectedly in traffic, causing catalytic converter damage due to improper air-fuel ratios, or inducing internal mechanical stress on the transmission and drivetrain components.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Throttle Body Carbon Deposition: Heavy varnish and carbon buildup around the brass throttle blade can bind the mechanical movement, causing the actuator motor to draw excessive current and trigger a fault code.
  • Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor Failure: Internal potentiometer wear or intermittent electrical resistance inside the accelerator pedal assembly sends conflicting voltage signals to the PCM, disrupting calculated driver demand.
  • Electronic Throttle Body Actuator Motor Failure: Internal winding degradation or gear stripping inside the throttle body housing prevents the PCM from accurately controlling the throttle plate angle.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing the Chrysler electronic throttle control warning requires a systematic approach using specialized automotive diagnostic tools. First, connect a high-tier OBD-II diagnostic scanner capable of reading enhanced Chrysler powertrain fault codes (DTCs) to retrieve stored trouble codes such as P2111, P2135, or related APP sensor codes. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector attached to both the accelerator pedal and the throttle body for corrosion, frayed wires, or loose terminal pins. Visually inspect the throttle bore for excessive carbon contamination and clean it using specialized throttle body cleaner while ensuring you do not manually force the butterfly valve open, which can damage the internal nylon gears. If physical components test within specification using a digital multimeter, perform an electronic throttle relearn procedure via your diagnostic scan tool. Once the underlying mechanical or electrical fault is repaired, clear the Diagnostic Trouble Codes from the PCM memory to extinguish the warning light.
