Chrysler Yellow Tire Pressure Monitoring TPMS Warning Light

⚠️ WARNING / SERVICE REQUIRED

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Chrysler Yellow Tire Pressure Monitoring TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) Warning Light illuminates when the vehicle detects that one or more of its tires is significantly under-inflated, over-inflated, or when there is a fault within the TPMS electronic architecture. In modern Chrysler vehicles, including models like the Chrysler 300, Pacifica, and Voyager, this subsystem relies on direct TPMS sensors mounted inside each wheel assembly (attached to the valve stem). These radio-frequency (RF) sensors continuously measure internal tire pressure and temperature, transmitting telemetry data to the RF Hub or Body Control Module (BCM). If any tire drops approximately 25 percent below the manufacturer’s recommended cold inflation pressure placard (located on the driver-side door jamb), or if a sensor fails to communicate, the BCM commands the instrument cluster to illuminate the yellow warning indicator. It may also flash for 60 to 90 seconds upon vehicle startup before staying solid if a system fault is present rather than a simple pressure loss.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

From a mechanical and safety standpoint, the yellow severity color indicates an advisory and caution state, meaning you can drive the vehicle for a short distance to reach a safe service location, but you should not ignore it. Operating a Chrysler vehicle with under-inflated tires drastically increases tire flexing, which generates excessive internal heat, degrades the rubber compound, and exponentially raises the catastrophic risk of a tread separation or blowout. Furthermore, low tire pressure negatively compromises your braking distances, electronic stability control (ESC) tracking, traction control efficiency, and overall fuel economy. If the light is blinking, it typically points to an electrical sensor failure rather than an immediate pressure drop, but you must manually verify tire pressures with a handheld gauge before undertaking any extended driving.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Natural Air Permeability and Ambient Temperature Drop: Tires naturally lose about 1 to 2 PSI of air pressure per month through the rubber casing. Additionally, for every 10-degree Fahrenheit drop in ambient outside temperature, tire pressure drops by roughly 1 PSI, frequently triggering the TPMS light during seasonal transitions.
  • Punctures, Slow Leaks, and Valve Stem Failures: A nail, screw, damaged bead seal, or leaking Schrader valve core can cause a slow leak. This leads to a gradual pressure loss in a single tire that eventually falls beneath the operational threshold of the Chrysler BCM.
  • Dead or Faulty TPMS Sensor Batteries: The internal lithium-ion batteries inside direct TPMS sensors have a finite lifespan, typically lasting between 5 to 10 years. When the battery depletes entirely, or if the internal piezoelectric pressure transducer fails, the sensor ceases radio transmission, causing the system to fault.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

To diagnose and clear the Chrysler Yellow Tire Pressure Monitoring TPMS Warning Light, start by using a reliable analog or digital tire pressure gauge to manually check the cold inflation pressure of all four tires, including the full-size spare if equipped. Inflate or deflate each tire to match the exact PSI specifications listed on the driver door placard. Once the pressures are correctly set, many modern Chrysler vehicles will automatically clear the warning light after driving continuously above 15 to 25 miles per hour for a few minutes, allowing the BCM to re-poll the RF sensors. If the light remains illuminated or flashes, a specialized TPMS activation and diagnostic tool is required to scan individual sensor IDs, determine if a sensor has failed, or check for stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) within the Body Control Module. Replace any dead sensors, correct physical tire damage, and use the scan tool to relearn the sensor positions if necessary to extinguish the warning light permanently.
