DAF Green ECO Mode System Indicator Light

ECO
🟢 INFO / SYSTEM ACTIVE

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The DAF Green ECO Mode System Indicator Light signals that the vehicle’s proprietary electronic engine management and powertrain control modules are actively operating in an optimized fuel-economy profile. On modern DAF commercial trucks and heavy-duty vehicles, this green indicator is an informational and confirmatory status light rather than a fault warning. It illuminates when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) detect that fuel delivery maps, transmission shift schedules (such as the TraXon automated gearbox), and auxiliary torque demands have shifted to maximize thermodynamic efficiency and minimize hydrocarbon consumption. The sensors feeding this loop include the Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor, manifold absolute pressure sensors, vehicle speed sensors, and predictive GPS-linked topographical mapping systems that evaluate upcoming road loads to seamlessly govern fueling parameters.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

Yes, absolutely. Because this indicator carries a green severity color rating, it means the system is functioning precisely as engineered to save fuel and reduce emissions. There are no immediate risks to the engine, exhaust aftertreatment systems, or vehicle safety. In fact, continuing to drive with this light illuminated is the desired operational state for long-haul fleet efficiency. You may notice slightly more conservative throttle response or automatic upshifting at lower engine revolutions per minute, but this is entirely normal and designed to protect the engine components while lowering operational costs.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Driver Engagement of Eco Switch: The operator has manually depressed the dashboard-mounted eco-mode selector, prompting the VCU to adopt a reduced torque curve and softer throttle mapping.
  • Predictive Cruise Control Activation: The DAF Predictive Cruise Control (PCC) system has engaged, utilizing topographical map data to automatically modulate engine output and gear selection for maximum momentum, thus activating the eco state.
  • Optimal Operating Conditions Met: The engine management software has autonomously determined that coolant temperature, ambient barometric pressure, load weight, and transmission temperature are within the exact parameters required to allow fuel-saving closed-loop strategies.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Because the DAF Green ECO Mode System Indicator Light is a positive feedback indicator rather than a diagnostic trouble code (DTC), it does not require a diagnostic scan tool or mechanical repair to turn off. If you wish to deactivate the ECO mode and return the vehicle to standard performance and throttle response, simply locate the ECO switch on the dashboard or steering column controls and toggle it off. If the light remains permanently illuminated despite toggling the physical switch, inspect the physical switch for sticking contacts or debris. For persistent software locks, connect a DAF DAVIE diagnostic laptop to the OBD-equivalent cab port to inspect VCU configuration parameters, verify throttle position sensor calibration, and ensure that no hidden torque-limitation faults are overriding standard vehicle operations.
