DAF Yellow Traction Control Slip Warning Light

⚠️ WARNING / SERVICE REQUIRED

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The DAF Yellow Traction Control Slip Warning Light indicates a fault, deactivation, or temporary intervention within the vehicle’s Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) or Electronic Stability Program (ESP) subsystem. On heavy-duty DAF commercial vehicles, this warning is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM) or the Electronic Braking System (EBS) ECU detects an inconsistency in wheel rotational speeds, a malfunctioning yaw rate sensor, or a communication breakdown over the Controller Area Network (CAN bus). The system continuously monitors individual wheel slip rates via inductive or hall-effect sensors mounted at each hub. When the yellow warning lamp illuminates, it means the secondary safety threshold monitoring slip under acceleration has detected a fault, prompting the system to disable active slip control while maintaining standard, baseline hydraulic braking functionality.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

A yellow severity rating signifies a cautionary status rather than an immediate catastrophic mechanical failure, meaning you can typically continue driving, but with heightened situational awareness. Because the DAF traction control and slip regulation system is temporarily disabled, the drive wheels are susceptible to spinning under heavy acceleration, especially in wet, icy, or loose-surface road conditions. You will not lose total foundation braking control, but the vehicle’s computerized stability safety net is offline. It is advised to complete your current transit cautiously, avoid aggressive throttle applications, and schedule a diagnostic inspection promptly to restore full electronic safety protocols.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Wheel Speed Sensor Contamination or Failure: Metallic debris, road grime, or brake dust accumulation on the magnetic tone ring or the inductive wheel speed sensor can distort signal output, triggering the slip warning light.
  • CAN Bus Communication Faults: Intermittent electrical resistance, corrosion in the chassis wiring harness, or loose connector pins between the EBS ECU and the transmission control unit can disrupt data transmission regarding wheel velocities.
  • Incorrect Tire Circulating Radius: Significant discrepancies in tire inflation pressures, mismatched tread wear across drive axles, or the installation of incorrect tire sizes disrupt the baseline rotational speed calculations performed by the stability computer.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing this warning light on a DAF commercial vehicle requires connecting a specialized heavy-duty diagnostic scanner or OEM-compatible software interface (such as DAF Davie) to the vehicle’s diagnostic port. First, perform a visual and manual check of all tires to ensure matching dimensions, correct inflation pressures, and undamaged tread. Next, inspect the individual wheel speed sensors and their respective wiring harnesses near the axle hubs for physical damage, corrosion, or excessive ferrous debris buildup. Use a digital multimeter to check sensor resistance values against manufacturer specifications if a sensor failure is suspected. Once the root mechanical or electrical fault is repaired using the diagnostic tool, clear the active and stored fault codes from the EBS or vehicle control unit memory to extinguish the warning light.
