Dodge Red Electric Power Steering EPS Warning Light

🔴 CRITICAL / STOP DRIVING

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Dodge Red Electric Power Steering (EPS) Warning Light is a critical dashboard indicator that signals a catastrophic or safety-related failure within the vehicle’s electronic power assist system. Unlike older hydraulic setups, modern Dodge vehicles utilize an Electric Power Assist Steering system, which relies on an electric motor, a steering angle sensor, a dedicated EPS control module, and complex wiring harnesses to deliver variable steering effort. When this indicator illuminates in bright red accompanied by an audible chime, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) has registered a severe fault that compromises or completely disables the power-assist functionality.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

No, you cannot safely continue to drive the vehicle. Given the Red severity color rating, this indicates an immediate safety hazard. If the EPS system fails completely, the vehicle will instantly revert to manual mechanical steering. Because modern Dodge cars and SUVs are heavy and engineered with high-ratio steering racks paired with wide tires, losing electronic assist will make the steering wheel extremely heavy and difficult to turn, especially at low speeds or during sudden emergency maneuvers. Continuing to drive risks a complete loss of steering control, potentially leading to a severe collision.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Internal Electric Motor Failure: The brushless electric motor mounted to the steering column or steering rack has experienced an internal short circuit, winding failure, or thermal overload protection lockout.
  • Voltage Drops and Alternator Failure: EPS systems draw massive electrical currents. A weak battery, heavily corroded battery terminals, or a failing alternator that drops system voltage below eleven volts will trigger an immediate red EPS shutdown to protect the vehicle’s electrical architecture.
  • Corroded Wiring Harnesses or CAN Bus Communication Faults: Water intrusion or physical chafing in the main harness connectors near the subframe can disrupt power delivery or sever the Controller Area Network (CAN bus) data signals between the PSCM and the central computer.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing a red EPS warning light requires a systematic approach using specialized tools. First, inspect the 12-volt battery health and charging system output using a digital multimeter; the resting voltage should be approximately 12.6 volts, and the charging voltage should read between 13.5 and 14.5 volts with the engine running. Next, connect an advanced OBD-II diagnostic scanner capable of reading manufacturer-specific chassis (C-codes) and body control codes, as standard generic code readers cannot access the PSCM memory. Retrieve the active diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) to pinpoint whether the issue is sensor-based, thermal, or electrical. Inspect the under-hood wiring harnesses near the steering rack for signs of physical damage or corrosion. Once the underlying mechanical or electrical component is repaired or replaced, the diagnostic tool must be used to clear the fault codes from the module’s memory and perform any necessary steering angle sensor recalibrations to extinguish the red warning light.
