Geely Yellow Throttle Control Electronic Warning Light

⚠️ WARNING / SERVICE REQUIRED

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Geely Yellow Throttle Control Electronic Warning Light indicates a fault within your vehicle’s Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) system. Unlike older mechanical throttle setups connected by a physical cable, modern Geely vehicles utilize a drive-by-wire system. This system consists of the Accelerator Pedal Module (APM), the Engine Control Module (ECM), and the Electronic Throttle Body (ETB) housing a motorized butterfly valve and Dual Throttle Position Sensors (TPS). When this yellow indicator illuminates, it means the ECM has detected a discrepancy, voltage variance, or signal interruption between the accelerator pedal sensors and the throttle body actuator. The subsystem affected is the primary air-fuel delivery management circuit, forcing the vehicle to enter a protective operational mode to prevent unintended acceleration.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

Given the yellow severity rating, you can technically drive the vehicle short distances, but you must do so with extreme caution and only to reach a safe parking spot or repair facility. When this warning light activates, the Geely ECM usually triggers a failsafe known as “Limp-Home Mode.” In this state, the engine power output is severely restricted, acceleration will be sluggish or unresponsive, and the engine may idle erratically. Continuing to drive long distances risks complete loss of throttle response, potential catalytic converter damage due to unburnt fuel anomalies, and creating dangerous traffic situations on highways or intersections.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Electronic Throttle Body Contamination: Carbon varnish, soot, and oil blow-by accumulated around the butterfly valve blade can prevent the throttle plate from achieving its calibrated resting position, triggering sensor divergence codes in the ECM.
  • Faulty Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor: Wear and tear, moisture ingress, or electrical resistance anomalies within the potentiometer inside the accelerator pedal assembly will send erratic voltage signals to the ECM, causing the light to trigger.
  • Throttle Actuator Motor Failure or Wiring Harness Damage: Internal failure of the electric DC motor inside the throttle body, or corrosion, chaffing, and loose pins in the multi-pin connector harness linking the ECM to the throttle body, will interrupt closed-loop throttle control.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

To properly diagnose and reset the Geely Yellow Throttle Control Electronic Warning Light, begin by performing a visual inspection under the hood. Check the electrical wiring harness and connector plug attached to the throttle body for secure seating, corrosion, or frayed wires. Next, use an OBD2 diagnostic scanner capable of reading enhanced manufacturer-specific powertrain codes to extract the exact Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored in the Geely ECM, such as P2135 or P0121. If the trouble codes point to carbon buildup, remove the air intake ducting and clean the throttle bore and butterfly valve using specialized throttle body cleaner and a soft brush, taking care not to force the motorized valve open manually. After performing mechanical repairs or cleaning, use your OBD2 scanner to clear the diagnostic trouble codes from the computer memory. Finally, perform a throttle re-learning procedure by turning the ignition key to the ON position without starting the engine for thirty seconds, allowing the ECM to recalibrate the baseline voltage parameters of the electronic throttle body.
