GMC Green Cruise Control Active Indicator Light

🟢 INFO / SYSTEM ACTIVE

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The GMC Green Cruise Control Active Indicator Light is a status notification rather than a traditional diagnostic warning. When this green icon illuminates on your GMC instrument cluster, it signifies that the vehicle’s electronic speed control system is actively maintaining your desired set speed without requiring continuous pressure on the accelerator pedal. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM), working in tandem with the electronic throttle body and vehicle speed sensors, constantly monitors drivetrain velocity and wheel speed inputs to keep the vehicle operating at the predetermined velocity. This subsystem directly affects the fuel delivery, ignition timing, and electronic throttle actuator control to manage vehicle momentum efficiently.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

Yes, you can safely continue driving with this light illuminated, as it is a Green informational indicator representing normal, intended operation. Because green lights on automotive dashboards denote active convenience features rather than mechanical failures or safety faults, there is zero risk to your engine, transmission, or braking systems caused by this light being on. It simply tells you that your automated speed maintenance system is doing its job.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • System Activation: The driver has purposefully pressed the steering wheel-mounted cruise control activation button and set a desired cruising speed.
  • Resumption of Stored Speed: The driver has engaged the resume function after temporarily braking, allowing the vehicle to accelerate back to the previously programmed speed.
  • Adaptive Following Adjustment: On vehicles equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control, the system is actively modulating throttle and braking inputs to match the speed of a lead vehicle while keeping the master cruise function green.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Because this light indicates normal operation, it does not require a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) scan via an OBD2 reader or a manual inspection under the hood. To turn off or reset this indicator, simply press the cancel button on your steering wheel, tap the brake pedal to mechanically disengage the system, or press the main cruise control power switch to power down the subsystem completely. If the light remains on despite pressing the cancel button or tapping the brake pedal, you may be experiencing a sticking mechanical brake pedal position sensor or an electrical fault in the steering wheel switch assembly, which would then require a multimeter and a professional scan tool to isolate the faulty input signal.
