Great Wall Yellow Anti-Lock Braking System ABS Warning Light

ABS
⚠️ WARNING / SERVICE REQUIRED

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Great Wall Yellow Anti-Lock Braking System ABS Warning Light illuminates when the vehicle electronic control unit detects a malfunction within the ABS network. Specifically, this subsystem monitors wheel rotational speed using inductive or Hall-effect sensors mounted at each wheel hub, feeding real-time data to the ABS control module. If the module registers erratic signals, an open circuit in a wheel speed sensor, abnormal hydraulic modulator valve pressure, or internal controller failure, it deactivates the automated pulsing feature to prevent unpredictable braking behavior and triggers this yellow warning indicator on the instrument cluster.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

Because this is a yellow-tier warning light, it indicates a compromised secondary safety system rather than an immediate catastrophic engine failure. You can still drive the vehicle, but you must do so with extreme caution. Your standard friction braking system will continue to function normally for hydraulic stops, meaning you can still slow down and stop the car. However, the anti-lock feature is disabled, meaning your wheels are susceptible to locking up during emergency braking or on slippery, wet, and icy road surfaces. It is strongly recommended to drive directly to a qualified repair facility without delay.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Wheel Speed Sensor Failure: Debris, metallic brake dust, or physical damage can accumulate on the magnetic tone ring or damage the sensor wiring harness at one of the four wheel hubs, resulting in lost signal continuity.
  • Faulty ABS Hydraulic Modulator Valve: Internal solenoid valves or the electronic control module integrated into the hydraulic pump assembly can experience electrical shorts, sticking valves, or internal circuit board failures.
  • Blown ABS Fuse or Power Relay: An electrical surge or corrosion in the engine bay fuse box can blow the dedicated fuse or damage the relay supplying operating voltage to the ABS pump motor.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

To accurately diagnose the root cause of the Great Wall ABS warning light, you will need an advanced OBD2 diagnostic scanner capable of reading chassis and body control modules, as generic engine scanners cannot access ABS diagnostic trouble codes. Begin by plugging the scanner into the under-dash diagnostic port to retrieve specific fault codes, such as wheel speed sensor circuit errors. Next, perform a visual inspection under the vehicle to check all wheel speed sensor wiring harnesses for chafing, rodent damage, or loose connectors. Inspect the tone rings for accumulation of metallic debris or missing teeth. After repairing the underlying mechanical or electrical fault, use the diagnostic scanner to clear the trouble codes from the memory and road-test the vehicle to ensure the yellow indicator remains off.
