Infiniti Red Electric Power Steering EPS Warning Light

🔴 CRITICAL / STOP DRIVING

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Infiniti Red Electric Power Steering (EPS) warning light illuminates on your instrument cluster to signal a critical fault within the vehicle’s electronic power assist system. Unlike traditional hydraulic power steering systems that rely on engine-driven pumps, modern Infiniti models utilize an advanced Electronic Power Steering system—often incorporating computer-controlled rack-mounted motors or steer-by-wire technology like Infiniti’s Direct Adaptive Steering (DAS). When the EPS control module registers a severe communication failure, internal electrical short, motor overheating, or a critical sensor discrepancy (such as redundant steering angle sensor disagreement), it immediately flags this high-priority fault. The red color designation signifies a complete or partial loss of power assistance, requiring immediate mechanical and electrical attention to ensure vehicle control.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

No, you cannot and should not drive the vehicle with the Red Electric Power Steering warning light illuminated. A red severity rating indicates an active, critical safety fault. In this state, the electronic steering assist may be entirely disabled, leaving you with manual steering control. Because modern Infiniti steering racks are heavily weighted and physically demanding to turn without power assistance—especially at low speeds or during parking maneuvers—attempting to drive poses a severe safety hazard. Furthermore, if your vehicle is equipped with a steer-by-wire system, a red EPS light can mean the backup mechanical clutch has engaged or that steering input responsiveness is severely compromised, risking a total loss of directional control on the road.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Steer-by-Wire Actuator or Motor Failure: Internal electrical winding failure, brush degradation, or mechanical binding inside the steering rack assist motor will instantly trigger a red EPS fault due to lost torque capability.
  • Low System Voltage or Alternator Degradation: Infiniti EPS systems draw substantial electrical current. A weak 12-volt battery, corroded battery terminals, or a failing alternator can cause system voltage to drop below the operational threshold, shutting down the EPS module.
  • Steering Control Unit (EPS/DAS) Internal Fault: The dedicated electronic control module governing the steering can suffer from internal logic failures, corrupted firmware, or blown internal circuit board components, causing the system to lock into a safety fault state.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing a red EPS warning light on an Infiniti requires more than a basic powertrain OBD2 scanner, as generic code readers typically cannot access chassis and steering control modules. First, perform a preliminary visual inspection under the hood: check the 12-volt battery health, terminal tightness, and major fusible links connected to the EPS system. Next, connect an advanced, bi-directional OBD2 diagnostic scanner capable of reading Manufacturer-Specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from the EPS or DAS module. Retrieve the active and stored fault codes to identify the exact subsystem or sensor causing the failure. Use a digital multimeter to verify that steady battery voltage (above 12.6 volts off, and 13.5 to 14.5 volts running) is reaching the steering control module’s power input pins. Once the underlying mechanical or electrical root cause is repaired—such as replacing a faulty battery, cleaning a ground strap, or installing a new steering actuator—the diagnostic tool must be used to clear the hard fault codes and perform a steering angle sensor calibration or zero-point reset to extinguish the light.
