Infiniti Yellow Throttle Control Electronic Warning Light

⚠️ WARNING / SERVICE REQUIRED

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Infiniti Yellow Throttle Control Electronic Warning Light indicates a fault within the vehicle Drive-by-Wire electronic throttle control system. Unlike traditional mechanical cable-operated throttles, modern Infiniti models use an Accelerator Pedal Position sensor to read driver input, transmitting this electrical signal to the Engine Control Module. The ECM then commands the Electronic Throttle Actuator, which features a DC electric motor and internal Throttle Position sensors mounted on the throttle body assembly, to precisely open or close the throttle valve. When this yellow indicator illuminates, the ECM has detected a discrepancy between the requested pedal position and the actual throttle plate position, or it has registered an electrical resistance fault in the sensor circuits, motor relay, or spring-return mechanism. This places the subsystem into a degraded operating mode to prevent erratic acceleration.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

Because this warning light carries a yellow severity rating, it signifies a non-catastrophic system degradation rather than an immediate mechanical seizure, but it demands cautious operation. You can typically drive the vehicle over a short distance, but you will likely experience a dramatic reduction in engine power, often referred to as Limp Home Mode. The vehicle may refuse to accelerate past a low speed, idle roughly, or respond sluggishly to pedal inputs. Continuing to drive long distances with a compromised throttle system is strongly discouraged, as unpredictable throttle response creates severe safety hazards in traffic and can cause secondary damage to the catalytic converters due to unburnt fuel.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Carbon Deposition and Sticking Plate: Heavy carbon varnish buildup around the throttle bore and butterfly valve can impede the mechanical movement of the plate, causing the internal motor to draw excessive current or fail to hit target angles.
  • Faulty Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor: Wear and tear, moisture intrusion, or electrical resistance anomalies within the multi-channel potentiometer inside the accelerator pedal assembly will send erratic voltage signals to the ECM.
  • Throttle Actuator Motor or Circuit Failure: Internal brush wear within the DC electric motor on the throttle body, or a localized high-resistance failure in the wiring harness connector, prevents the ECM from accurately positioning the throttle valve.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing this warning light requires a multi-step procedure combining electronic scanning and physical inspection. First, connect an advanced OBD2 diagnostic scanner capable of reading manufacturer-specific Powertrain Diagnostic Trouble Codes to retrieve stored P-codes relating to the electronic throttle control system. Next, perform a visual and physical inspection under the hood: remove the air intake ducting and check the throttle body bore for heavy carbon buildup, ensuring the butterfly valve moves freely without mechanical binding. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector attached to the throttle body and accelerator pedal for corrosion, loose pins, or frayed wires. If codes point to a mechanical limit discrepancy, perform an electronic throttle control relearn procedure using a bi-directional scan tool or the specific manual pedal-tapping reset sequence outlined in your Infiniti service manual. Once the underlying mechanical or electrical fault is repaired and codes are cleared, the warning light will extinguish.
