What Does This Indicator Mean?
The Peugeot Yellow Glow Plug Warning Light—often styled as a coil symbol or the word “PREHEAT”—indicates a fault within the diesel pre-heating and post-heating management subsystem. On Peugeot diesel engines (such as the HDi and BlueHDi powerplants), glow plugs are vital heating elements that raise the temperature inside the combustion chambers to ensure efficient fuel ignition during cold starts. The Engine Control Module (ECM) continually monitors the electrical resistance, continuity, and temperature output of each glow plug, alongside the glow plug control unit and associated relay circuits. When the ECM detects an anomaly, such as an open circuit in a heating element, an incorrect voltage draw, or a communication failure on the pre-heating relay bus, it illuminates this yellow warning indicator on the instrument cluster to alert the driver of a potential powertrain fault.
Can I Still Drive with This Light On?
A yellow severity rating means the vehicle is operating with a non-critical fault and enters a degraded operating strategy, but you should exercise immediate caution. While you can typically drive the car for a short distance to reach a safe location or a repair facility, continued operation presents several mechanical risks. A malfunctioning glow plug system compromises cold-start capability, potentially leaving you stranded after the engine cools down. Furthermore, modern Peugeot diesel engines utilize glow plugs not just for starting, but also for post-heating cycles and vital diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration phases. If the glow plug system is disabled due to a fault, successful DPF regeneration may be inhibited, leading to severe soot accumulation, clogged exhaust filters, and eventual catastrophic backpressure damage to the turbocharger and engine.
Common Causes of the Warning
- Failed Glow Plug Element: Internal mechanical degradation or a burned-out heating filament within one or more glow plugs, resulting in an open circuit or incorrect electrical resistance detected by the ECM.
- Faulty Glow Plug Relay or Control Unit: Internal component failure within the pre-heating relay box, preventing proper power distribution and switching signals from the ECM to the individual glow plugs.
- High Resistance Wiring and Connectors: Corrosion, thermal fatigue, or loose pins within the main wiring harness plug that connects the glow plug rail to the engine control module, causing voltage drops and communication errors.
How to Diagnose and Reset It
Diagnosing this warning light requires a methodical approach starting with a dedicated OBD-II diagnostic scanner capable of reading manufacturer-specific Peugeot Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored in the ECM memory, such as codes relating to glow plug cylinder circuits or the pre-heating relay. Once the specific fault code is retrieved—identifying exactly which cylinder or control circuit has failed—perform a physical inspection under the hood. Use a digital multimeter set to resistance (ohms) to test each glow plug directly by disconnecting the harness; a healthy plug typically shows very low resistance (under 2 ohms), whereas a failed plug will show infinite resistance (open circuit). Alternatively, measure voltage drop across the glow plug rail during a cold-start command. Replace any faulty glow plugs in sets or repair damaged wiring harness pins as necessary. After the physical repair is successfully completed, use your OBD-II scan tool to clear the diagnostic trouble codes from the ECM memory, which will automatically extinguish the yellow warning light on your dashboard.
