Volvo Green Cruise Control Active Indicator Light

🟢 INFO / SYSTEM ACTIVE

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Volvo Green Cruise Control Active Indicator Light is a positive status notification rather than a traditional diagnostic warning. When illuminated in a brilliant emerald green on your Volvo’s digital instrument cluster (such as the 8-inch or 12.3-inch Sensus or Google-powered driver displays), it signifies that the vehicle’s standard cruise control system or advanced Pilot Assist functionality is fully engaged, operational, and actively maintaining the driver-set vehicle speed. The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and the Brake System Control Module coordinate inputs from the front-facing radar unit embedded in the grille, the windshield-mounted multi-task camera, and the wheel speed sensors to constantly monitor and regulate throttle application and braking pressure. This subsystem directly affects the powertrain and braking architecture to relieve the operator of constant pedal actuation.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

Yes, absolutely. Because this is an informational green indicator rather than an amber or red DTC-associated warning (Diagnostic Trouble Code), it indicates that your vehicle is functioning exactly as commanded by the driver. There are no immediate risks to the engine, transmission, or safety systems when this light is active. In fact, it confirms that your speed regulation systems are online. However, drivers must always remain attentive, keep their hands on the steering wheel, and maintain total situational awareness, as cruise control does not replace active, human-controlled driving supervision.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • System Activation: The driver has intentionally pressed the cruise control activation and set buttons on the left steering wheel spoke, prompting the Central Electronic Module (CEM) to engage the vehicle speed governor.
  • Pilot Assist or Adaptive Cruise Control Engagement: The vehicle has detected a clear lane ahead or a lead vehicle, and the driver has transitioned from standby mode to active longitudinal and lateral vehicle control.
  • Driver Override Cancellation Reset: The light illuminates solid green after the driver has temporarily accelerated past the set speed to pass another vehicle and subsequently released the throttle, allowing the system to resume its previously programmed velocity.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Because the Green Cruise Control Active Indicator is a normal operational status light, it does not require an OBD2 diagnostic scan tool, digital multimeter, or a manual inspection under the hood to clear. To turn off this indicator, you simply need to cancel the cruise control system. You can do this by firmly pressing the brake pedal, which instantly opens the brake light switch circuit and disengages the system; pressing the dedicated toggle button on the steering wheel; or depressing the clutch pedal on manual transmission models if applicable. If the light remains illuminated or flashes unexpectedly when you have not engaged the system, it may indicate a sticky steering wheel button or a temporary software glitch in the Central Electronic Module, which can typically be resolved by safely pulling over, turning off the vehicle ignition for thirty seconds, and restarting the engine to initiate a full system bus reboot.
