How to Diagnose and Troubleshoot

A systematic diagnostic approach is crucial for accurately identifying the root cause of P0580. Always begin by consulting the vehicle-specific service manual for wiring diagrams, pinout charts, and component locations.

  1. Verify the DTC and Freeze Frame Data: Connect an OBD-II scan tool and confirm P0580 is present. Review any stored freeze frame data, which captures engine conditions (RPM, vehicle speed, engine load, etc.) at the time the code was set. This can provide valuable context.
  2. Visual Inspection:

  4. Cruise Control Switch Test (DMM):

Compare these readings to the manufacturer’s specifications. Look for open circuits (OL or infinite resistance) when continuity should be present, or incorrect resistance values.
  5. Wiring Integrity Test (DMM):
    • Continuity: Disconnect the battery. Disconnect the cruise control switch connector and the appropriate PCM/module connector. Using the DMM, test for continuity (ohms) on the ‘A’ circuit wire between the switch connector and the PCM/module connector. Expect very low resistance (near 0 ohms).     • Short to Ground: With both connectors disconnected, place the DMM’s negative lead on a known good chassis ground and the positive lead on the ‘A’ circuit wire. Expect an open circuit (OL). Any low resistance reading indicates a short to ground.
    • Short to Voltage: Reconnect the battery. With the switch disconnected but the PCM/module connected, backprobe the ‘A’ circuit wire at the PCM/module connector. Check for unexpected voltage on the circuit when no cruise control functions are active. This could indicate a short to a power source.
  6. Clock Spring Test (If Applicable): If the switch tests good but is steering wheel-mounted, test the clock spring’s internal circuits for continuity as per the service manual. Often, a failed clock spring will also trigger an airbag warning light.
  7. Scan Tool Live Data: If available, monitor the cruise control switch inputs in the scan tool’s live data stream.   • Replace Blown Fuse and Address Underlying Cause: If a blown fuse was found, replace it. However, it is critical to determine why the fuse blew. If a short circuit caused it, merely replacing the fuse without fixing the short will result in repeated failure.
