Geely Red Electric Power Steering EPS Warning Light

🔴 CRITICAL / STOP DRIVING

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The Geely Red Electric Power Steering (EPS) Warning Light is a critical alert designed to notify the driver of a severe fault within the vehicle’s electronic steering system. Unlike traditional hydraulic power steering that relies on engine-driven pumps, modern Geely vehicles utilize a sophisticated Electric Power Steering setup. This system consists of an Electronic Control Unit (EPS ECU), a high-torque electric assist motor mounted to the steering column or steering rack, and multiple torque and angle sensors.

When this indicator illuminates in a striking red color, it means the EPS ECU has detected a catastrophic failure, a complete loss of communication on the Controller Area Network (CAN bus), internal motor hardware failure, or an abnormal electrical voltage drop. The sensors continuously monitor driver input force against vehicle speed; when they fail to receive accurate feedback or when the electric assist motor stops responding, the system immediately disables itself to prevent erratic, unpredictable steering behavior. This shifts the physical workload entirely back to manual steering.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

No, you should not drive the vehicle with the Geely Red Electric Power Steering Warning Light illuminated. Because the color red signifies a critical safety emergency in automotive engineering standards, operating the vehicle in this state poses an extreme safety risk. Without electrical assistance, the steering wheel will become immensely heavy, requiring profound physical strength to turn, especially at low speeds, during tight parking maneuvers, or in emergency evasive actions. Furthermore, if the root cause is an electrical short circuit within the EPS motor, continuing to drive could potentially trigger a thermal event or drain the 12-volt battery completely, leading to sudden vehicle stalling.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • EPS ECU Internal Hardware Failure: The dedicated electronic control module governing the steering motor can suffer from blown internal microprocessors, damaged circuit boards, or moisture ingress from cowl leaks.
  • Abnormal Voltage or Alternator Malfunction: Electric power steering systems draw massive amounts of electrical current. If the alternator output drops below optimal thresholds or if the main battery terminals are heavily corroded, the EPS ECU will shut down to protect itself.
  • Torque Sensor or Steering Angle Sensor Failure: If the primary sensors tracking how hard and in what direction the driver is turning the steering wheel fail or go out of calibration, the system cannot safely calculate the required motor assist.
  • Steering Rack Mechanical Binding or Motor Burnout: Physical damage to the steering rack, internal gear stripping, or a burned-out electric assist motor winding will trigger an immediate fault code and illuminate the red warning indicator.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing a red EPS warning light on a Geely vehicle requires specialized diagnostic equipment, as generic OBD2 code readers typically only scan powertrain modules (P-codes). To properly identify the root cause, you must use an advanced diagnostic scan tool capable of reading Chassis (C-codes) specific to Geely’s Body Control and Steering modules. Connect the scanner to the 16-pin OBD2 port beneath the dashboard and retrieve the stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the EPS module.

Next, perform a visual and physical inspection under the hood. Check the 12-volt battery voltage using a digital multimeter; it should read roughly 12.6 volts with the engine off and between 13.5 to 14.7 volts with the engine running. Inspect the main high-amp fuses linked to the EPS system in the engine bay fuse box, as well as the main wiring harness plugs connected directly to the steering column motor. Look for signs of corrosion, loose terminals, or frayed wires. Once the underlying mechanical or electrical fault has been professionally repaired—such as replacing a faulty sensor or charging a failing battery—use the advanced diagnostic scanner to clear the fault codes from the EPS memory and perform a steering angle sensor calibration reset if required by the system.
