What Does This Indicator Mean?
The Geely Red Airbag SRS Malfunction Warning Light is a critical safety alert that illuminates on your instrument cluster when the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) detects a fault. In modern Geely vehicles, such as the Coolray, Emgrand, or Monjaro, the SRS electronic control unit constantly monitors a complex network of impact sensors, seatbelt pretensioners, clocksprings, and airbag igniters. When the ignition is turned on, the SRS module performs a self-diagnostic check. If it registers out-of-range resistance, an open circuit, a short, or internal controller failures within any part of the restraint architecture, it triggers this solid red indicator to signal that the safety system may not deploy properly in the event of a collision.
Can I Still Drive with This Light On?
The short answer is no, you should exercise extreme caution, and it is strongly recommended not to drive the vehicle until the issue is resolved. Because the severity color is red, this indicates an immediate safety-critical system failure. While the engine, transmission, and standard braking systems will continue to function normally, your vehicle’s passive safety infrastructure is compromised. In a severe impact, airbags may fail to deploy at all, or conversely, the system could experience an accidental deployment. For your protection and the safety of your passengers, have the vehicle inspected immediately.
Common Causes of the Warning
- Faulty Clockspring Assembly: The spiral cable located behind the steering wheel can suffer from internal wire fatigue due to frequent steering rotation, leading to a loss of electrical continuity for the driver-side airbag and horn circuit.
- Under-Seat Wiring Harness Resistance: Movement of the front seats backward and forward frequently strains the yellow wiring connectors and wires located beneath the driver and passenger seats, triggering high resistance faults in the side airbag or seatbelt pretensioner circuits.
- Impact Sensor Failure or Corrosion: Front and side crash sensors mounted in the bumper crash zones or door pillars are exposed to moisture, road salt, and physical vibrations, which can corrode terminals or damage internal piezoelectric elements, causing communication errors with the SRS module.
How to Diagnose and Reset It
Diagnosing a Geely SRS fault requires specialized tools because generic OBD2 code readers designed strictly for engine emission codes cannot access the Supplemental Restraint System module. You will need a bi-directional OBD2 diagnostic scanner capable of reading Geely-specific chassis and body control modules, or a dedicated factory scan tool. Begin by plugging the scanner into the Data Link Connector under the dashboard and retrieving the specific SRS Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Once you identify the specific circuit or component causing the fault—such as a driver-side squib or passenger seat sensor—visually inspect the associated wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion. After repairing or replacing the faulty component, use the diagnostic scanner to clear the fault memory and reset the SRS warning light. Note that unlike some engine codes, safety-related SRS lights typically will not clear themselves automatically even if the underlying physical issue is temporarily resolved; they must be manually reset through the diagnostic software.
