Engine Toyota 1AZ-FE

From 2000 to 2014, the company assembled and installed the 2.0-liter Toyota 1AZ-FE or 2.0 VVT-i engine on popular concern models like the Camry, RAV4, Ipsum, and Avensis Verso. A VVT-i phase regulator was installed on the intake shaft of the majority of power unit models.

The engines 1AZ-FSE, 2AZ-FE, 2AZ-FSE, and 2AZ-FXE are also part of the AZ series.

The 3S-FE was replaced by a 2.0-liter gasoline engine on the RAV4 crossover in 2000. This engine has a timing chain drive, an aluminum 16-valve DOHC head without hydraulic lifters, an aluminum block, cast iron sleeves, and an open cooling jacket. A block of balancer shafts and an inlet phase regulator were present in almost all engine modifications.

This motor was updated in 2006 as part of the switch to Euro 4 environmental standards. Along with the updated piston, the generator already had an overrunning clutch, more contemporary sensors, a slightly different phase regulator, an ETCS-i electric choke (which was instantly available in several markets), and a spacer in the cooling jacket to enhance heat dissipation in the upper portion of the cylinder. This power unit was equipped with cylinder head bolts with a longer thread, just like its series counterparts.

  • Toyota Aurion 1 (XV40) in 2006 – 2009;
  • Toyota Camry 5 (XV30) in 2001 – 2006; Camry 6 (XV40) in 2006 – 2012; Camry 7 (XV50) in 2012 – 2014;
  • Toyota Ipsum 2 (XM20) in 2001 – 2009;
  • Toyota RAV4 2 (XA20) in 2000 – 2005; RAV4 3 (XA30) in 2005 – 2010.

Disadvantages of the 1AZ-FE engine

Cylinder head bolts with excessively short threads were utilized in engines during the early years of production, which led to gasket failure and the emergence of an emulsion in the expansion tank. The manufacturer lengthened the thread in 2006, which made the issue less frequent.

Engines built after 2006 are known for their oil consumption after 150,000 kilometers of operation, most likely as a result of the piston’s renewal using thin oil scraper rings.

The AZ motor’s single-row bush-roller chain is more dependable than contemporary lamellar ones, but it frequently needs to be replaced after 200,000 kilometers of operation, usually in conjunction with a phase regulator.

Low-quality fuel is not tolerated by this power unit, and it quickly becomes dirty. Cleaning the throttle, mass air flow sensor, and injectors should be the first step in determining the cause of floating engine speeds.

A low resource here also distinguishes the generator’s overrunning clutch and the water pump. Additionally, you have to change the valve clearance every 100,000 kilometers because there are no hydraulic lifters.
