The intake and outlet camshafts of the FB20 engine feature an AVCS variable valve timing system. A chain that requires no maintenance is used in the timing chain. To enhance environmental performance, the engine is distinguished by the installation of a plastic intake manifold with TGV flaps at the intake.

This engine has undergone multiple modifications:
- Since 2010, the FB20B has been manufactured in Japan and fitted to well-known models like the Forester, Impreza, and XV. From the first few kilometers of operation, this motor is renowned for its remarkable oil consumption.
- The FB20D engine, which took the place of the FB20B engine under the hood of the well-liked Impreza and XV models, was first introduced in 2016. Instead of using distributed fuel injection, the new power unit emphasizes direct fuel injection.
- From 2013 to 2017, the Japanese company produced the FB20X, which was fitted to the hybrid Impreza and XV models. A comparable engine with direct fuel injection has now replaced this one.
The FB16 and FB25 engines are also members of the FB family.
The FB20B was set up on:
- Subaru Forester 3 (SH) in 2010 – 2013;
- Subaru Forester 4 (SJ) in 2012 – 2018;
- Subaru Forester 5 (SK) since 2018;
- Subaru Impreza 4 (GJ) in 2011 – 2016;
- Subaru XV 1 (GP) in 2011 – 2017.
The FB20D was installed on:
- Subaru Impreza 5 (GK) since 2016;
- Subaru XV 2 (GT) since 2017.
The FB20X was installed on:
- Subaru Impreza 4 (GJ) in 2015 – 2016;
- Subaru XV 1 (GP) in 2013 – 2017.

Disadvantages of the FB20 engine
Oil consumption in the initial kilometers is this unit’s most well-known issue;
The phase regulators will malfunction if the suggested oil is not used.
The engine keeps an eye on the state of its cooling system because it fears overheating;
The FB20D’s direct injection system made it extremely demanding on fuel quality; electronic throttle issues are typically the cause of floating idle.
