From 1974 until 1999, the DAF 1160 was manufactured. DAF obtained the license to use the Leyland 0.680 base engine during development. The engine size and power were increased by the manufacturer; depending on the configuration, the initial DKA 1160 models had between 165 and 230 horsepower.

A more potent DKS 1160 engine with a turbocharging system was created a few years later. The unit’s power could be increased without increasing the engine size thanks to this system. The performance with 228 horsepower (310 kW) was the most well-liked.

The manufacturing of horizontal engines for outdoor use in buses and transportation vehicles started a year later. They had 186 horsepower (252 kW) of power.
