What Does This Indicator Mean?
The Acura Yellow Blind Spot Monitoring BSM Warning Light illuminates on your instrument cluster when the vehicle’s advanced driver assistance system detects a fault or temporary blindness within the side-assist radar architecture. Acura vehicles utilize high-frequency millimeter-wave radar transceivers typically mounted behind the left and right rear bumper fascias. These sensors continuously sweep the adjacent lanes to identify vehicles entering your blind spots. When the Onboard Gateway or the BSM Electronic Control Unit records an internal sensor fault, an obstruction, CAN bus communication errors, or miscalibration, it triggers this yellow warning indicator to inform the driver that the safety-critical blind spot assist subsystem is currently disabled.
Can I Still Drive with This Light On?
From a strict mechanical and powertrain perspective, yes, you can safely continue to drive your vehicle. Because this is a yellow informational and driver-assist warning indicator rather than a red critical engine fault, it does not affect the engine, transmission, braking hydraulics, or primary steering mechanisms. However, you must keep in mind that your blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and potentially related lane-keeping features are completely deactivated. You will need to rely entirely on your physical rearview and side-view mirrors and traditional shoulder checks while changing lanes until the system is professionally diagnosed and repaired.
Common Causes of the Warning
- Bumper Obstruction and Debris: Accumulation of heavy mud, road salt, snow, ice, or non-metallic bumper wraps directly over the rear bumper corner radar transceiver zones can block the millimeter-wave signals and trigger a fault.
- Radar Transceiver Misalignment: A minor rear-end collision, parking lot bump, or loose bumper mounting bracket can physically shift the radar sensor out of its precise factory alignment calibration parameters.
- Electrical and CAN Bus Communication Faults: Water intrusion into the wiring harness connectors, damaged pins, or compromised power and ground circuits leading to the left or right BSM radar modules will disable the subsystem.
How to Diagnose and Reset It
Begin your diagnostic procedure by thoroughly washing the rear bumper fascia where the radar modules are housed, removing any dirt, ice, or metallic film that could disrupt the radar waves. Next, inspect the rear bumper for any structural sagging, loose clips, or signs of previous impact damage that could have altered the bracket angles. If the physical components are clean and secure, use an advanced OBD2 scanner or a dedicated Acura diagnostic system capable of communicating with the Body Control Module and Driver Assist System network to read specific diagnostic trouble codes. Clear the logged codes using the scan tool; if the yellow warning light immediately returns, a deeper inspection of the radar module wiring, internal sensor failure, or a professional re-calibration using target boards at an authorized service center will be required.
