What Does This Indicator Mean?
The SsangYong Yellow Glow Plug Warning Light, which frequently takes the form of a coil-shaped symbol on the instrument cluster, indicates a fault within the diesel pre-heating system or a general powertrain anomaly detected by the Engine Control Module (ECM). On modern SsangYong common-rail diesel engines—such as the e-XDi or older Mercedes-licensed units found in models like the Korando, Rexton, and Actyon—this light serves a dual purpose. During initial key-on, it monitors the operational readiness of the high-temperature glow plugs that heat the combustion chambers for cold starts. However, once the engine is running, the ECM utilizes this same indicator as a generic Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or electronic fault warning for the fuel injection and emissions subsystems.
Can I Still Drive with This Light On?
Because this warning carries a yellow severity rating, you can typically drive the vehicle for a short distance to reach a safe location or a repair facility, but you should do so with extreme caution. If the light flashes or remains illuminated while driving, the ECM will often trigger a protective “limp-home” mode, severely restricting engine power, RPM, and boost pressure to prevent internal mechanical damage. Ignoring this indicator can lead to unburnt fuel washing down cylinder walls, clogged diesel particulate filters (DPF), or complete failure of the fuel injection system.
Common Causes of the Warning
- Faulty Glow Plug Resistance: One or more internal heating elements within the glow plugs have degraded, burnt out, or developed an open circuit, preventing proper thermal pre-conditioning.
- Glow Plug Control Module Failure: The dedicated relay or electronic control module fails to deliver the precise voltage and cycling required by the glow plugs during and after engine startup.
- Fuel Rail Pressure Deviation: A pressure drop in the high-rail system, often caused by a failing high-pressure fuel pump, bad fuel pressure regulator, or excessive injector leak-off, triggers the glow plug icon as a general powertrain fault.
- Brake Light Switch Malfunction: Many SsangYong models are programmed to flash or illuminate the glow plug coil light if the dual-circuit brake pedal switch fails, as the ECM cross-references brake input with throttle position.
How to Diagnose and Reset It
Diagnosing this specific fault requires a systematic approach beginning with a specialized OBD2 diagnostic scanner capable of communicating with SsangYong proprietary modules, as generic code readers may not pull chassis or powertrain-specific trouble codes (DTCs). Connect the scanner to the 16-pin data link connector under the dashboard to retrieve active diagnostic trouble codes related to glow plug circuits (such as P0670 through P0674) or fuel delivery issues. If the codes point to the glow plugs, use a digital multimeter set to ohms to test the electrical resistance of each glow plug directly at the terminal; a reading significantly out of standard manufacturer specification confirms a dead plug. If testing the glow plug circuit reveals no faults, inspect the brake light switch operation at the pedal and ensure all brake bulbs are functioning correctly. Once the underlying mechanical or electrical component is replaced or repaired, use the diagnostic scan tool to clear the fault memory from the ECM, which will successfully extinguish the warning light on your instrument cluster.
