SsangYong Yellow Throttle Control Electronic Warning Light

⚠️ WARNING / SERVICE REQUIRED

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The SsangYong Yellow Throttle Control Electronic Warning Light indicates a fault within the vehicle’s electronic throttle control (ETC) system. On modern SsangYong models—such as the Rexton, Korando, or Tivoli—the traditional mechanical throttle cable has been replaced by a drive-by-wire system. This architecture relies on the Engine Control Module (ECM), accelerator pedal position sensors, electronic throttle actuator motor, and throttle position sensors located on the throttle body assembly. When the ECM detects a correlation error, voltage discrepancy, mechanical binding, or circuit resistance outside of factory-calibrated parameters between the pedal and the throttle valve, it illuminates this yellow warning light to alert the driver that the throttle subsystem has entered a degraded operating state.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

Given its yellow severity rating, you should exercise extreme caution. While the vehicle may still be drivable, it will typically enter a safety measure known as “limp-home mode.” In this state, the ECM severely restricts engine power, limits throttle response, and caps maximum vehicle speed to prevent a runaway condition or catastrophic engine overspeed. Continuing to drive long distances or in high-speed traffic poses a safety risk due to the sudden loss of acceleration capabilities. It is strongly advised to pull over safely, inspect the vehicle, and minimize driving to the nearest safe location or repair facility.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) Sensor Failure: Internal potentiometer wear or electrical track degradation within the pedal assembly causes the ECM to receive conflicting voltage signals regarding driver throttle input.
  • Throttle Body Carbon Deposition: Excessive carbon buildup and varnish accumulation around the butterfly valve plate can restrict its movement, causing the electronic actuator motor to work outside its normal duty cycle limits.
  • Faulty Electronic Throttle Actuator Motor: Internal winding degradation or brush wear within the DC motor mounted on the throttle body prevents it from accurately adjusting the valve angle commanded by the ECM.
  • Wiring Harness and Connector Corrosion: High resistance, moisture ingress, or frayed wiring within the dedicated sub-harness connecting the accelerator pedal, throttle body, and ECM disrupts critical communication data packets.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing this electronic throttle control fault requires a systematic approach beginning with a compatible OBD-II diagnostic scanner capable of reading manufacturer-specific chassis and powertrain trouble codes (DTCs). Plug the scanner into the under-dash diagnostic link connector to retrieve stored codes, which will point directly to faulty sensor circuits or actuator performance issues. Next, perform a visual and physical inspection under the hood: remove the plastic engine cover and intake ducting to inspect the throttle body. Check for heavy carbon deposits around the butterfly valve and clean it using a dedicated throttle body cleaner while avoiding manual force on the motorized valve gear. Utilize a digital multimeter to check continuity and reference voltages at the harness connectors. Once the underlying mechanical restriction, sensor failure, or wiring fault has been professionally repaired, use the OBD-II scanner to clear the diagnostic trouble codes from the ECM memory and perform an idle re-learn procedure if required by your specific SsangYong model.
