SsangYong Yellow Anti-Lock Braking System ABS Warning Light

⚠️ WARNING / SERVICE REQUIRED

What Does This Indicator Mean?

The SsangYong Yellow Anti-Lock Braking System ABS Warning Light illuminates on your instrument cluster when the vehicle’s electronic control unit detects a fault within the active safety braking architecture. Specifically, systems like the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) module or the dedicated ABS control unit continuously monitor wheel speed sensors, hydraulic modulator valves, pump motor operations, and electrical circuit continuity. When a discrepancy occurs—such as implausible wheel speed data from one of the corners, intermittent CAN bus communication errors, or internal valve resistance outside factory parameters—the module disables the anti-lock functionality to prevent erratic braking behavior and triggers this yellow warning light on the dashboard.

Can I Still Drive with This Light On?

Because this indicator features a yellow severity rating, it does not mandate an immediate roadside shutdown of the engine, but it must be treated with a high degree of caution. Your standard friction-based hydraulic foundation brakes will continue to function normally, meaning you can still stop the vehicle using the brake pedal. However, the anti-lock prevention feature is entirely deactivated. This means that in emergency braking situations, on wet, icy, or loose road surfaces, your wheels are at high risk of locking up, potentially causing a loss of directional steering control and significantly extended stopping distances. You should drive directly to a safe location or a repair facility at a reduced speed, avoiding harsh maneuvers.

Common Causes of the Warning

  • Wheel Speed Sensor Failure: Accumulation of metallic brake dust, road grime, or corrosion can foul inductive wheel speed sensors, or the internal coil within the sensor can open-circuit, preventing it from reading the rotation of the tone ring.
  • Damaged Sensor Wiring Harness: Due to continuous suspension articulation and exposure to harsh road environments, the wiring harness leading to individual wheel speed sensors frequently suffers from chafing, internal wire fractures, or connector corrosion.
  • Hydraulic Modulator Pump Malfunction: Internal electrical faults within the ABS hydraulic control unit, such as a failed electronic control module solder joint, a stuck isolation solenoid, or an inoperative return pump motor, can trigger an immediate system shutdown.

How to Diagnose and Reset It

Diagnosing this fault requires a systematic approach beginning with a visual inspection of all four wheel assemblies to check for dangling or damaged sensor wires, especially near the wheel hubs and suspension struts. Next, you will need an advanced OBD2 diagnostic scanner capable of communicating specifically with the SsangYong chassis and ABS modules, as generic engine scanners cannot read ABS diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Retrieve the stored specific fault codes to pinpoint which wheel or component is failing. If you have a digital multimeter, you can check the AC voltage generation of inductive wheel speed sensors while manually spinning the wheel, or check resistance values for Hall-effect sensors. Once the underlying mechanical or electrical fault is repaired—such as replacing a faulty sensor or repairing a severed wire—use the bi-directional scan tool to clear the diagnostic trouble codes from the module memory and perform a road test to confirm the warning light successfully resets.
