Engine Toyota 5S-FE

From 1989 to 2001, a factory in Japan and the USA assembled the 2.2-liter Toyota 5S-FE engine, which was used in regular Camry sedans as well as Celica and MR2 sports coupes. A gas version of the power unit, designated 5S-FNE, was available in the US market.

With a 4-cylinder cast-iron block, a 16-valve aluminum cylinder head without hydraulic lifters, and distributed fuel injection, the most powerful engine in the S line made its debut on the fifth generation Celica coupe in 1989. The intake camshaft was rotated by the timing drive, and a gear allowed the exhaust shaft to communicate with it. Here, as with the majority of the company’s engines larger than 2.0 liters, a block of balancers was employed.

The motor has undergone four modifications and multiple modernizations since its release. Other camshafts are different between the first 1989 and the second generation of the 1993 model. The third generation of 1996 had already switched from camshaft sensor to crankshaft synchronization before switching entirely to coil ignition. The exhaust was updated at about the same time. In 2000, Denso supplied the newest injectors with twelve orifices to the fourth generation.

The engines in the S family are 4S-Fi, 4S-FE, 3S-FC, 3S-FE, 3S-FSE, 3S-GE, 3S-GTE, and 5S-FE.

  • Toyota Camry 3 (XV10) in 1991 – 1996; Camry 4 (XV20) in 1996 – 2001;
  • Toyota Celica 5 (T180) in 1989 – 1993; Celica 6 (T200) in 1993 – 1999;
  • Toyota Harrier 1 (XU10) in 1997 – 2000;
  • Toyota MR2 2 (W20) in 1990 – 1999;
  • Toyota Scepter XV10 in 1992 – 1996;
  • Toyota Solara 1 (XV20) in 1998 – 2001.

Disadvantages of the Toyota 5S-FE engine

Although this is one of the most trouble-free engines, oil consumption usually starts around 200,000 kilometers. Replacing oil scraper rings and caps is the only way to reduce lubricant consumption.
This timing belt can break due to more than just wear because it is loaded with a pump and an oil pump. The fact that the valves don’t bend is also beneficial.
Owing to its advanced age and remarkable mileage, the motor frequently worries about insignificant issues: owners complain about oil leaks, sensor failures, particularly those of the idle speed controller or lambda probes, low engine mount resources, ignition system failures, and the need to adjust valves.
