From 1991 to 2006, the company assembled the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi 4G92 gasoline engine, which was fitted to popular concern models like the Lancer, Mirage, Colt, and Carisma. Both a sports DOHC-MIVEC modification and a civilian SOHC version of this motor were available.

The engines 4G91, 4G93, and 4G94 are also part of the 4G9 family.
The engine was mounted on:
- Mitsubishi Carisma DA in 1995 – 2004;
- Mitsubishi Colt CA in 1992 – 1996; Colt CJ in 1996 – 2003;
- Mitsubishi Lancer CA in 1991 – 1992; Lancer CB in 1991 – 1996; Lancer CK in 1995 – 2003;
- Proton Wira in 1993 – 2009;
- Proton Satria in 1994 – 2006.

Disadvantages of the Mitsubishi 4G92 engine
The motor’s SOHC modification is incredibly dependable, and the valves won’t bend even if the belt breaks;
Nevertheless, the DOHC modifications are more erratic and prone to oil consumption after 150,000 kilometers of operation; the SOHC version lacks hydraulic lifters and the valves are adjusted every 50,000 kilometers;
Furthermore, DOHC versions’ hydraulic lifters break down rather quickly;
The low attachment reliability is a common issue for all engines in the series.
