Engine Nissan MR20DE

From 2005 until 2020, the Yokohama plant produced the 2.0-liter Nissan MR20DE engine, also known as MR20. Initially, it was mounted on the Nissan Bluebird Sylphy sedan (also known as the Nissan Almera in Russia, manufactured by AvtoVAZ) and the Nissan Lafesta and Nissan Serena minivans. It has been installed on the Nissan Qashqai (known as the Dualis in Japan and the Rogue in America) since 2006 and the Nissan X-trail since 2007. Under the M4R index, this engine is installed in both Nissan and Renault vehicles.

This power unit, which features a 4-cylinder aluminum block with cast-iron sleeves and an open cooling jacket, an aluminum 16-valve cylinder head, a timing chain, and a phase regulator solely on the intake camshaft, is a quintessential example of the Japanese school of motor building from that era. Here, solid pushers are used to adjust the valves instead of hydraulic lifters.

Here, fuel injection is conventional distributed; however, the motor was eventually able to meet the stringent Euro 5 environmental standards because of the use of an electronic throttle assembly.

MR15DDT, MR16DDT, MRRA8DE, MR18DE, and MR20DD are internal combustion engines that belong to the MR family.

The engine was mounted on:

  • Nissan Bluebird Sylphy G11 in 2005 – 2012;
  • Nissan Serena C25 in 2005 – 2010;
  • Nissan Sentra 6 (B16) in 2006 – 2012;
  • Nissan Sentra 7 (B17) in 2012 – 2020;
  • Nissan Teana 2 (J32) in 2008 – 2013;
  • Nissan Teana 3 (L33) in 2012 – 2020;
  • Nissan Qashqai 1 (J10) in 2006 – 2013;
  • Nissan X-Trail 2 (T31) in 2007 – 2014.

Disadvantages of the MR20DE engine

Although many owners complain about oil consumption and occasionally even low runs, this unit is very dependable and has no significant design flaws. Eliminating the oil burner can aid in oil selection, decarbonization, or an existing overhaul.

Regulations state that the timing chain should last the entire unit’s service life, but in practice, it frequently needs to be replaced after up to 200,000 kilometers. and frequently in conjunction with a phase regulator.

Cases of a significant drop in power during hot weather are described in the specialized forums. This is usually caused by the air temperature sensor, which is integrated into the mass air flow sensor.

This block’s aluminum head is extremely delicate; it fears overheating as well as the master’s excessive effort when screwing in bolts or, for instance, spark plugs. Be very cautious or you’ll need to find a new cylinder head because of cracking.

The unit’s minor issues include the belt of mounted units whistling constantly, the floating speed caused by throttle contamination, and the knocking of valves that need to be adjusted.
