The 2.0-liter 16-valve Mazda FE-DE or FE-DOHC engine was built between 1987 and 2004 and fitted to the Kia Sportage crossover under the FED index as well as different iterations of the 626 in the GD body. In other markets, this motor’s modifications are referred to as FE3 or FE-ZE.

F6, FP, FP-DE, F8, FE, FE-DE, FE3N, FS, FS-DE, FS-ZE, and F2 are all members of the F-engine family.
The engine was mounted on:
- Mazda 626 GD in 1987 – 1992;
- Mazda Capella GD in 1987 – 1992;
- Mazda MX-6 GD in 1987 – 1992;
- Kia Clarus 1 (FE) in 1995 – 2001;
- Kia Spectra 1 (SD) in 2001 – 2004;
- Kia Sportage 1 (JA) in 1993 – 2006.

Disadvantages of the Mazda FE-DE engine
This series’ engines have a 16-valve cylinder head, which is extremely prone to overheating.
Additionally, cheap oil is intolerable to hydraulic lifters, which leads to their rapid failure.
Piston rings frequently cause an oil burn to start closer to 200,000 kilometers.
The timing belt resource is roughly 60,000 kilometers, but the valves won’t bend here if it breaks.
The remaining engine issues are related to ignition system fluctuations and lubrication leaks.
