Only since 2016 has the company assembled the 2.0-liter Mercedes OM654 diesel engine, which stands out for having an aluminum cylinder block with Nanoslide cast iron plasma spraying. The transverse arrangement OM654q, an updated OM654M modification, and a 1.6-liter modification are all available.

The diesel R4-family comprises OM616, OM601, OM604, OM611, OM640, OM646, OM651, OM654, and OM668.

Disadvantages of the OM654 engine
The limited supply of rockers is a well-known weakness of this diesel unit.
You will need to replace the hydraulic lifters and camshaft if you overlook this issue.
Bad fuel is completely intolerable to the Bosch CP4 fuel system with piezo injectors.
Soot quickly overgrows intake channels in the cylinder head and valves, even from poor diesel fuel.
Environmental bells and whistles like particulate filters, SCRs, and EGRs cause a lot of problems as usual.
