The first two iterations of the highly popular Astra model were equipped with the 1.7-liter diesel Opel X17DTL or 2H8 engine, which was manufactured from 1994 to 2000. This motor is a member of the GM Family II engine line and was created by the company.

The X20DTL, X20DTH, and X22DTH engines are also part of the X family.

Disadvantages of the X17DTL engine
The unit is renowned for its good repairability and unpretentious approach to diesel fuel quality;
Fuel pump malfunctions are the most common cause of starting issues;
The turbine quickly begins to run on oil, and fixing it is rather costly;
The timing belt is a small resource, and the motor is at risk if it breaks or jumps;
Oil consumption is typically caused by a leak in the crankcase ventilation or crankshaft oil seal.
