From 1993 until 2002, the 7A-FE engine was manufactured. The first generation produced for Canada had 149 Nm at 2800 rpm and 115 horsepower at 5600 rpm. A version designed specifically for the US was manufactured between 1995 and 1997; it had 105 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 159 Nm at 2800 rpm. The most potent versions of the engine are found in Indonesia and Russia.

The engines 8A-FE, 5A-FE, 5A-FHE, 4A-FE, 4A-FHE, 4A-GE, 4A-GZE, and 7A-FE are also part of the A family.
With a cast-iron block and an aluminum cylinder head with two camshafts for sixteen valves, a timing belt drive rotates the intake camshaft, and a gear connects the exhaust shaft to it, the largest power unit of the A series was introduced later than its injection counterparts. Additionally, hydraulic lifters are not offered.
Apart from the standard engine, a cost-effective Lean Burn modification was also popular. This can be easily identified by the nozzles that are integrated into the cylinder head rather than the intake manifold.
The engine was mounted on:
- Toyota Avensis 1 (T220) in 1997 – 2001;
- Toyota Caldina 1 (T190) in 1996 – 1997; Caldina 2 (T210) in 1997 – 2001;
- Toyota Carina 6 (T190) in 1994 – 1996; Carina 7 (T210) in 1996 – 2001;
- Toyota Celica 6 (T200) in 1993 – 1999;
- Toyota Corolla 7 (E100) in 1993 – 1997; Corolla 8 (E110) in 1997 – 2002;
- Toyota Corolla Spacio 1 (E110) in 1997 – 2001;
- Toyota Corona 10 (T190) in 1994 – 1996; Corona 11 (T210) in 1996 – 2001;
- Toyota Sprinter E110 in 1995 – 2001.

Disadvantages of the 7A-FE engine
increased gasoline burnout. The lambda probe isn’t working. We urgently need a replacement. The MAP sensor needs to be adjusted if spark plugs, a dark outlet, and shaking at idle occur.
vibration and excessive gasoline use. It is necessary to clean the nozzles.
issues with speed. In addition to cleaning the throttle valve and verifying the location sensor, diagnostics of the valve at idle speed are required.
When the speed is out of order, the motor does not start. The fault lies with the unit’s heating sensor.
The speed is unstable. The injectors, crankcase valves, spark plugs, throttle valve block, and idle valve must all be cleaned.
The engine frequently stalls. faulty fuel pump, distributor, or filter.
more than one liter of oil used every 1,000 kilometers. It is necessary to replace the valve stem seals and rings.
knocking on the engine. Piston pin looseness is the cause. Every 100,000 kilometers, the valve clearances must be adjusted.
With a mileage of up to 300,000 kilometers, the 7A is generally a good unit (in addition to the Lean Burn version).
