Disadvantages of the Audi BAU engine
The majority of engine issues are caused by the electronically controlled injection pump VP44 failing;
The geometry of the turbine or the viscous coupling bearing frequently wedges at high mileage; bad oil rapidly damages hydraulic lifters and pressure-reducing valves; there are numerous examples of newfangled hollow camshafts bursting on the internet; and this motor is very vulnerable to oil leaks, particularly from under the valve cover.
