Since 2008, companies in Japan and the US have assembled the 2.0-liter Toyota 3ZR-FAE engine, which is installed in front-wheel drive models like the Avensis and all-wheel drive crossovers like the RAV4. Two variable valve timing systems, Dual VVT-i and Valvematic, are installed on the motor.

The engines in the ZR family are 1ZR-FE, 1ZR-FAE, 2ZR-FE, 2ZR-FAE, 2ZR-FXE, 3ZR-FE, and 3ZR-FAE.
The engine was mounted on:
- Toyota Allion 2 (T260) since 2008;
- Toyota Avensis 3 (T270) since 2009;
- Toyota C-HR 1 (AX10) since 2016;
- Toyota RAV4 3 (XA30) in 2008 – 2012; RAV4 4 (XA40) in 2012 – 2018;
- Toyota Wish 2 (AE20) in 2009 – 2017;
- Lexus NX 1 (AZ10) since 2014.

Disadvantages of the 3ZR-FAE engine
Drivers typically complain about unneeded knocks and noises at work;
Stories about this engine’s oil consumption per 1000 kilometers come in second;
The intake manifold is rapidly overgrown with coke, resulting in floating rpm; the water pump is frequently rented out at 50,000 km, and the chain is pulled after 150,000 km;
There are numerous issues with the Valvematic system, and the control unit frequently has bugs.
