Under license from Mitsubishi, the 1.5-liter Hyundai G4DJ engine was manufactured from 1985 to 1995. It was essentially an 8-valve replica of the well-known 4G15 power unit. A carburetor modification with the G4AJ index is frequently found in addition to the version with an injector.

G4DG engines are also part of the Orion family.
The engine was mounted on:
- Hyundai Excel 1 (X1) in 1985 – 1989; Excel 2 (X2) in 1989 – 1995;
- Hyundai Pony 3 (X1) in 1985 – 1989; Pony 4 (X2) in 1989 – 1994;
- Hyundai Lantra 1 (J1) in 1990 – 1995;
- Hyundai Scoupe 1 (X2) in 1988 – 1993.

Disadvantages of the Hyundai G4DJ engine
The most well-known issue is the oil burner, which is caused by stuck piston rings; additionally, the throttle assembly wears out quickly here and the engine speed begins to float;
Keep a close eye on the timing belt’s condition because if it breaks, the valves will bend; this engine prefers to pour candles rather than start in extremely cold conditions; on specialized forums, the unit’s weak pillows and unreliable gas pump are frequently criticized.
