From 1987 to 1997, a Japanese company produced the 4.2-liter Nissan TB42 engine, which was only used in the Y60 body and under the hood of the iconic Patrol SUV. When the engine was first introduced, it had a point-type distributor and a two-barrel carburetor. The TB42E with electronic ignition and fuel injection first appeared in 1992. The TB42 was now re-labeled as TB42S.

The TB45 and TB48DE internal combustion engines are also members of the TB family.
The engine was mounted on:
- Nissan Patrol 4 (Y60) in 1987 – 1998.

Disadvantages of the TB42 engine
Although the motor is a huge resource and very reliable, it uses a lot of fuel;
Ignition issues are common, but they can be easily and affordably resolved;
Unadjusted valves are frequently found to be the source of knocks under the hood;
The timing chain may stretch and need to be replaced after 250 thousand kilometers;
The engine dislikes overheating; if it does, compression may vanish or an oil burn may start.
