From 1997 to 1999, the company produced the 2.8-liter Nissan RD28ETi diesel engine, which was mounted in the rear of the Y61 and its Japanese equivalent, Safari. Under the index RD28Ti, this power unit was modified to include a mechanical high-pressure fuel pump.

The RD28 and RD28T internal combustion engines are also part of the RD series.
The engine was mounted on:
- Nissan Patrol 5 (Y61) in 1997 – 1999;
- Nissan Safari 2 (Y61) in 1997 – 1999.

Disadvantages of the RD28ETi engine
A cracked block head from overheating is the most frequent engine failure.
The issues related to the fuel system come in second;
Floating revolutions and traction dips brought on by the sensors’ and their wiring’s malfunction come next;
Hydraulic lifters can already knock in the engine after more than 100,000 kilometers;
Observe the timing belt replacement schedule because the valve always bends when it breaks;
The glow plug control unit is poorly situated and frequently burns out;
Leaks frequently occur from beneath the oil cooler gasket and in the crankshaft oil seal.
