For a brief period between 1985 and 1995, the 2.3-liter Nissan TD23 diesel engine was put together and used in D21 pickups, Caravan minibuses, and commercial vehicles. According to the TD index, this power unit is the least prevalent among a group of motors.

The TD25, TD27, TD27ETi, and TD42 internal combustion engines are part of the TD series.
The engine was mounted on:
- Nissan Navara 1 (D21) in 1985 – 1992;
- Nissan Caravan E24 in 1986 – 1990.

Disadvantages of the TD23 engine
Due to the timing gear drive, the engine is extremely noisy and prone to vibrations; the valve timing goes wrong and the gears wear out after 250,000 kilometers;
A pump or a gear block gasket begins to flow at roughly the same mileage;
Only the crankshaft position and oil pressure sensor are defective on the electrical side; detonation brought on by faulty fuel fractures the connections between the vortex chambers.
